This could have been so helpful, but unfortunately the book’s message gets lost amongst the author’s nonstop virtue signaling. Why does a book about housekeeping need to bring up veganism or transphobia? Especially while simulataneously promoting single use plastics and throwing one’s thrift store donation items in the trash? I guess because this is 2023, and unless you repeatedly vocalize how inclusive you are, you are automatically assumed to be a bigot. Listen: if you want someone to coddle you and tell you that everything you’re already doing/not doing is perfectly fine, and you don’t need to even consider doing anything different besides changing your attitude and maybe setting a timer, because you likely have some undiagnosed mental health condition that prevents you from picking up after yourself, then this is the book for you! Or, you could just try getting off TikTok and cleaning your freaking house.

I was raised by a feminist single mom who left my dad (a good, stable man) when I was 3, opting to raise us in poverty rather than do the hard work of personal growth. She always taught me that I didn't need a man, and all that mattered was landing a good career. So, I worked my butt off in school and got perfect grades and a scholarship and did everything she said, only to end up with a useless liberal arts degree, impoverished after college, working as a waitress because I couldn't cut it as a teacher. Following her lead, I treated men with a lot of disrespect and even disdain, as much as I craved being loved and cherished by them. Just like my mom, I became addicted to booze and dated alcoholics. I shacked up with my boyfriend at the age of 20 to save money, and from there had a string of toxic/abusive long term relationships. A couple years ago, at the age of 33, I pulled my head out of my you-know-what, got sober, and got back together with the only good man I've ever dated. We just got married a couple weeks ago, and I listened to this book hoping to learn a few things about being a good wife and making our marriage last. I was not disappointed! This book provides so much good information about men, what they need and want from their women, and how to avoid all ways society teaches us to sabotage our relationships with them. This was all probably common sense even 60 years ago, but these days it's rarely heard and probably "offensive" to many "woke" women. But as someone who has seen the full repercussions of what the feminist ethos does to women, children, and families, I'm resolved to do better. This book teaches that it is perfectly respectable, and even admirable, to put your family first, raise your own kids, have sex with your husband when he wants it, and be a sweet and loving presence in your home. I don't find any of that offensive!

The author really lays it all out there, how badly she had slipped into addiction and how ugly, sick and depraved her life had become as a result. I listened to the whole book in 2 days—it’s what Joseph Conrad called “the fascination with the abomination.” I wish she would have spent a little more time detailed how much better her life became after getting sober. I hope other listeners know that you don’t need to be drinking anywhere near this much to quit, and you don’t have to quit using detox/rehab/twelve steps. I recommend reading This Naked Mind and Quit Like a Woman for a more inspirational take on getting sober.
