Historia
Lee Gulliver never thought she’d find herself living on the streets—no one ever does—but when her restaurant fails, and she falls deeper into debt, she leaves her old life behind with nothing but her clothes and her Toyota Corolla. In Seattle, she parks in a secluded spot by the beach to lay low and plan her next move—until early one morning, she sees a sobbing woman throw herself into the ocean. Lee hauls the woman back to the surface, but instead of appreciation, she is met with fury.

Great story but do not buy the audible !!! Horrible audio performance made me switch to read
Revisado: 04-13-25
Loved the story and characters were interesting. Switched to read it bc one of the audio performers was just HORRIBLE. The performer who voices the character Lee is awful. Bland and can't pronounce words right like anticlimactic or Formica - so so many words. Had no feeling or expression and it almost felt like someone was reading it but didn't understand the words. It made me annoyed like either it was AI (and not intelligent or just a really cheap hiring by the author bc why don't you know so many words and why can't you pronounce the !)
The story though was really layered and interesting.once I purchased the book I was much happier. The other audio performer was not bad.

Revisado: 04-11-25
Love the character development and storyline. Good psychological thriller, keeping you engaged with multiple characters and their personalities and secrets. Also quite possibly the best audio performance I have ever listened to.

When you return from a work trip to find your husband dead in the pond, it’s best not to call him a liar and a cheat in front of the cops. Especially when you’ve spent the last few years telling anyone who’ll listen that you sometimes fantasize about killing him. It makes you look kind of, well, guilty.

A little over the top
Revisado: 03-18-25
Story kept me interested -
Sometimes. Little slow. But the characters are very 2D. I kind of had to fight to get through the story. I didn't feel like the twist was really that interesting at all. The writing is sort of confusing when the author changes perspective. I read the book and had the audio so I double wasted money ! The performance was really really not for me. You can barely tell who is speaking except when the performer does accents.

Sibling Rivalry and overinvolved parents!
Revisado: 03-10-25
If you have watched the show Succession, parts of this book will remind you of it. There is a patriarch who is worth massive money and has been using his money as leverage - pitting each of his adult children against each other. The family is on a vacation on an isolated island, and the author does an excellent job of creeping you out. The family itself is relatable, with a bond that is very close, and a tragedy in their past that has shaped them all over the years. Despite all their money, their lives are far from perfect. What is left is a reminder that underneath all the fancy clothes, posh accents, perfectly selected scotch or wine, and the image projected to the world, there is pain and heartbreak.....and a lurker waiting to manipulate and harm someone. As an Indian American I did struggle with the daughter in law and her perspective of Indian culture, feeling like it was a bit 2D, but I began to see more depth over the book. What I did like was a different type of book about an Indian family.

Interesting premise but didn't really create enough mystery or thrill for me
Revisado: 10-30-24
I love aware and have read all her books. This one I sort of got bored in the middle, just over and over descriptions of things ins slow mo doesn't mean it creates suspense I think it's sort of lazy writing instead of more cerebral plot creation. The overall plot idea was interesting, but could easily go flat - which it did. I felt like I couldn't relate to the characters, and wasn't that invested in what was happening to them.

I loved this book. Everything - characters plot, twists, all very developed. I have read almost all FM's books and this one was my favorites. I read and listen at the same time and I have to say the narration is excellent in this one.

Great characters, and as always making Nantucket come alive. I haven't read all the Nantucket books, mostly a Castaways fan- but I was still so moved especially when she was wrapping it up. It's a love song for where Hilderbrand lives. Also one of the best performances I have listened to.

Storyline interesting sometimes a bit cliche good but not my fav John Marrs
Revisado: 10-07-24
I liked some of the characters - really understood them. But others felt like cliches and a bit too far fetched or preachy. Moved a bit slowly at start and then rapid wrap up at the end. Many characters and jumping to past and present is confusing. Also there are very current references and then very old references (like MP3 player). I read the paper book at the same time as using audible and it's a pet peeve when they differ - which was the case here, just weird time differences 45 min changes to 5 min or 8 months becomes 2 years early.

Revisado: 09-25-24
I enjoyed the castaways and this novel picks up on some of their lives years later. I really love reading about Nantucket from the author's perspective as well. The storyline id strong, but it's really the character development that stands out. Ms Hinderbrand sort of writes about how complex we all are as humans, imperfect and flawed - but not all bad.
