Historia
From Martin Clark - praised by Entertainment Weekly as "our best legal-thriller writer" - comes a wickedly clever, tenderhearted, and intricately plotted novel about a hard-luck lawyer's refusal to concede defeat, even as fate, the court system, and a gang of untouchable con artists conspire against him.

My new fave author and narrator
Revisado: 11-28-18
Wow! This is my first book by Dorothy Koomson and now I'm going to read them all. I found the book because of the narrator...did I mention "wow" yet? The book is romantic, a bit spicy, smart and a tad scary but not too much of any of those characteristics.
The author keeps the interest without going overboard with the storyline.
Excellent!

I can't say want was more disappointing, the story or the narration. I kept hoping it would redeem

I LOVED this book. I read it for my book club and while I found it funny in the beginning, I didn't take to it immediately. I put it down and picked it up after being side tracked by some legal thrillers and I'm really glad I kept going. His story is painful and real and he manages to make is accessible to the reader. Did I mention I LOVED it?

The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

This is one of the best books I've read in a long while. A true and honest voice filled with character and curiosity, the story speaks to the resilience of humanity even when things seem hopeless. Both heart wrenching and funny the author and narrator give you a wide range of emotions to experience.

Narrator is excellent!
Revisado: 02-19-16
I love legal thrillers. This is my first book from this author and there are some pros and cons.
Complex storylines make the book interesting but the flow is disrupted by the pieces miraculously falling together. This beach bum, mushy, gushing with love lawyer is easy to like as is his girlfriend/detective. Their perfect relationship is a cute backdrop but a couple of times a bit too cute.
There is a lot of detail about the location and I found that enjoyable.
The author REALLY explains every detail in the courtroom interaction which felt like a bit more than I needed and made the book longer than necessary (although I LOVE long audiobooks).
Continuity in the recording was bumpy a few times (double recording of specific lines) but the narrator really makes the story. Excellent voice acting and all of the characters are believable.
There was really only one exchange that felt so over the top in the dialogue that it stands out as almost syrupy. J.D. provides a blow by blow description of Matt's life and questions how he was able to overcome and become so amazing! I thought I would have to SWOON!
All in all it is a good listen and the narrator truly makes this book a joy to listen to.
I'll listen to more of the series.
