Historia
Let's get one thing straight - Ivy Wilde is not a heroine. In fact she's probably the last witch in the world you'd call if you needed a magical helping hand, regardless of her actual abilities. If it were down to Ivy, she'd spend all day every day on her sofa, where she could watch TV, munch junk food, and talk to her feline familiar to her heart's content. However, when a bureaucratic disaster ends up with Ivy as the victim of a case of mistaken identity, she's yanked very unwillingly into Arcane Branch.

Cozy & well-written
Revisado: 08-17-24
This book is like cozy, but with enough ‘action’ to keep everything interesting and readers not wanting to put the book down (or take the headphones off!) until they reach the very end! Good world building, great character-development, and the narrator does such an amazing job with emotion and differentiating characters. Highly recommend!

When summoned to a fantastical world and granted powers by a broken System, most freshly minted protagonists would strap on their big-boy boots and get ready for their stats to start climbing. But Fischer isn't like most MCs. In fact, he doesn't want to be a hero at all. Fame? Fortune? Power? He had enough of all that in his old life. Discovering forbidden fishing techniques and petting every cute animal that comes within scritching distance? Now that's a good time.

Great Cozy portal LitRPG with basically zero crunch
Revisado: 06-30-24
Narrator is great, with good emotional range and distinct character voices. Main character is relateable, there’s a good cast of supporting characters that round out delightfully, and a lovely sense of humor that made me laugh out loud at times. Elements of the storyline that reminded me of Beware of Chicken, so if you liked the vibe of that you’ll probably like this one, and vice versa (the two were still very distinct though, I don’t mean to say they were repeats/readalikes or something). There were also elements that reminded me of He Who Fights with Monsters, like the Aussie slang incorporated to make everyone around confused at the absurdity, the heretical references, and the MCs kindness to common folk. I would recommend for sure!

Historia
Librarian Sylvia Ashe knows nothing about her past, having grown up without a father and a mother who refused to discuss him. When she stumbles upon a diary that suggests she's descended from magicians, she's skeptical. After all, magicians are special, and she's just an ordinary woman who loves books. She seeks answers from a member of the most prominent family of magicians, but she quickly learns that finding the truth won't be easy, especially when he turns out to be as artless as her, and more compelling and dangerous than books.

Narrator does a great job with difference voices and tones, and the character growth is great! Also the “who done it” part wasn’t obvious, like with some other mysteries! The wrap up was really well done. Would recommend!

Picked it up on a whim and couldn’t put it down
Revisado: 10-03-23
This is such an amazing read/listen. The narration is amazing - good inflection, not overly forced, good distinction between the characters, emotions were well done. The character- and world-building are where this book shines though. No characters are glazed over, everything builds on itself.
Aside from that stuff though, the book reads… cozy? More relatable? It’s basically a ‘normal’ guy that gets dragged into a bunch of shenanigans by people he is close to and uses his brain to logic through problems to get out of them (or panicking, there was no suave ‘I can fix everything if I logic it through’ for this one). Moderately self-deprecating, but not in an unhealthy way. Just read it and you’ll see what I mean! :)

Wes Malcolm has wrested Avalon back from men, monsters, and false gods. The next step is to bring the battle to his enemy's camp. The world of the Woadlands is under siege from two cataclysms at once. Fey of the winter courts seek to smother the planet in eternal frost, while an alien cancer gnaws at the ancient trees that power the magic of this world. Even the planet's godlike Icons believe their world is doomed.

Great story, good narration!
Revisado: 03-30-23
I read this series on ebook already, but bought on audible as a re-read. The voices are great, good inflection and everything, with two annoying problems… they would go from a very piercing loud voice to a soft voice back to back, so you get to pick between getting your ears assaulted by yelling, or you get to not understand the next sentence that is spoken softer. It wasn’t every sentence, but it was often enough that I constantly had to mess with the volume buttons on my headphones. Second, and this was on purpose so I’m not even sure I can complain about it, is that Breena’s voice is super annoying. Piercing, high pitched, and very hard to listen to for more than a sentence or two. But again, it matches the character, so I can’t complain that much.

If you liked the first one, this one is even better! Great character development & world building. Plus, some bombshells of background were dropped that you can’t WAIT to get to the bottom of. Also the last few chapters made me cry, sooo fair warning on that front.

Interesting power, highly recommend
Revisado: 02-15-22
Good narration - the only problem was that the females all sounded like old smokers or something. You get used to it after a little bit though! Good pacing and emotional inflection though.
Plot was good, but I found my mind wandering a bit during important scenes instead of being completely drawn in. The MC has a power though, and Annette was really creative with how it’s used! Generally a cool plot though and I recommend to anyone who is a fan of urban fantasy and/or bad boys with a heart of gold hidden really deep down.

When a freak accident ruins his body and his memory, Wes Malcolm loses his scholarship and his place in the world. Every treatment has failed, save one: a fully immersive VR game, designed by his late, disgraced father, that mimics the condition his body used to possess. To everyone's disbelief, his body and mind slowly improve, bit by bit, but it's still not enough. Then one night, he wakes up in a world just like the game his father designed. Here, he can grow, learn, and thrive.

Amazing narration, cool story with fun LitRPG mechanics
Revisado: 01-23-22
Amazing job on voices/inflection. As for the plot, I liked the humour, though the parts of the story on earth got pretty depressing and a lot of the ‘bad guys’ were a little… storybook evil? Motivations were a little simple, insults were kind of childish - that sort of thing. But it wasn’t to the point where it significantly distracted from the story.
I liked the different mechanics though. In a narrow genre like this, it’s often difficult to have a distinct magic system, and this isn’t completely unique (still mostly uses traditional stats and skill progression) but it has enough twists to keep it interesting.

Another hit by Drew Hayes!
Revisado: 05-28-21
This is a well-written, lighthearted story full of our main characters getting into and out of shenanigans while dodging danger at every other turn. The main character is a black-ops spy/secret agent that is protecting a person whose brain power is turned up to 11, with all the craziness and idiosyncrasies that come with that. The author does a great job with world-building and explaining all the little details relevant to a detective story.
I’m a fan of this author’s work in general, which is probably the only reason I picked this one up. Thankfully, it didn’t disappoint and the narration was on point as well! Good tone for different characters, and the emotional inflection came across easily.
