Revisado: 03-16-25
The Oz series enchanted me as a kid and I’ve had a lifelong fascination with L Frank Baum and his world. At age 10, I even did a biographical report on the author for school. However, I had no idea how closely entwined the history of OZ was with the rise of the suffragette movement and loved learning about the surrounding social and political landscapes which ultimately shaped Baum’s creation. From privileged to struggling, Baums journey was as marvelous, challenging and entertaining as his fantasy world.

Historia
A Queer History of the United States abounds with startling examples of unknown or often ignored aspects of American history - the ineffectiveness of sodomy laws in the colonies, the impact of new technologies on LGBT life in the 19th century, and how rock music and popular culture were, in large part, responsible for the devastating backlash against gay rights in the late 1970s. Bronski documents how, over centuries, various incarnations of social purity movements have consistently attempted to regulate all sexuality, including fantasies, masturbation, and queer sex.

This was incredible fun!
Revisado: 11-30-22
I have almost the entire SVH collection-like 150+ books so clearly I’m an avid fan. This was totally the follow up I needed. While the original series is great to revisit for nostalgia- Confidential allowed me to revisit all the old characters but with sharper, adult writing and a clever weaving of events and perspectives that not only tied up loose ends, but also directly addressed the elephant in the room- aka: Jessica’s monstrous personality disorder and Elizabeth’s frustrating enabling. I have the hard copy novel but The narrator January Levoy was truly fabulous so I was coaxed into listened to the story again as a refresher before diving into The Sweet Life next.

Revisado: 09-30-22
Fabulous content with a very clear and relatable delivery. Understanding the framework for our behaviors is crucial to change and this book made that very ingestable and memorable.
Ignore the criticism in the comments claiming the author’s self promotion was distracting- each chapter offers a downloadable work page or list which was made available (for free) on specific web pages. It was announced quickly and without fanfare so as not to interrupt the message in progress.
I intent to listen to this again!
