Historia
Charlie Johnson is your average American teenager. He’s a good student, he’s a good son, his girlfriend is the love of his life. He’s a nice kid. Charlie also murders people for their sins. A serious car accident leaves Charlie comatose, and when he comes to, he suffers from visions of unspeakable horror that keep him awake at night. He soon discovers that when he touches people, he can sense their evil and see their greatest evils. Some crimes are too terrible to describe. Some crimes are too terrible to go unanswered.

Great Idea with suspenseful unpredictability
Revisado: 05-25-18
Very good idea, with lots of moral ambiguity. This has the elements of a traditional horror story but they are treated in a new way. Violent, gory deaths, instead of being treated like some sort of thrill pornography, are treated with sadness and seriousness. They are portrayed as the hideously ugly acts they are. That alone makes this book stand out. The concept of someone who can see terrible crimes before they are committed and stop them by killing the criminal before they commit the crime was used in a recent movie or TV series — the name escapes me at the moment. But there the whole criminal justice system was based on it. Here it's just one guy who can see these acts, both past and forthcoming. So it's different, it's intriguing, and the question running through the reader's mind is, "How can this end?"
The narrator, Rick Gregory, does exactly what a good narrator does - he sets the tone and disappears into the story. It's just like reading it yourself.
Recommended for fans of dark psychological horror and even slasher fans. Well-written, provocative and makes you think.

Imaginative and Sexy
Revisado: 03-28-17
The Gender Game imagines what might be a version of actual happenings in the real world. It's fantasy, and the idea of what it might be like for a man to suddenly become a woman is explored in an original way that hasn't been done in any of several movies I've seen on the subject. More sexiness than humor here. The narration is well done and easy to follow. Pretty hot.

Hard to find stories like this anymore...
Revisado: 02-15-17
Mainstream, non-literary short stories just for enjoyment don't seem to have a home in any magazines anymore. The mystery and science fiction genre mags thankfully manage to survive. But to publish straight-ahead fiction, you need short story collections in an anthology or a single author collection.
These stories are in the vein of O. Henry and other classic short story writers, with interesting ideas fleshed out with easy-to-grasp characters. Plot twists and ironic endings give an extra edge to the reading experience.
There is a thematic thread of heinous crime intersecting with unremarkable ordinary lives, and it packs quite a punch.
Short and sweet as the title says, it leaves you wanting more from this skillful crafter of tales.

Pulls you in skillfully
Revisado: 02-09-17
While the premise of the story is hardly unusual nor is the plot terribly original, the skill of the storytelling grips you and holds you. I didn't particularly find the characters to be really fascinating either. But as the end approached I was shocked to find out that I really, really CARED about what happened to the characters, especially one of them. Not fancifully written, not calling attention to what it's doing to you as you read, but definitely doing it to you! Caroline McLaughlin's narration is also quietly perfect. Very well done, and boy did I care! I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Historia
Ten women, each one between a rock that might be her tombstone and a hard place that it may take a gun to blast her way out of. Author Thad Brown's collection of hard bitten, bullet paced fiction centered on women embroiled in violence and danger takes pulp to a whole new level. Being a woman often means fighting against all odds. And the women in Brown's tales are charter members of The Smoking Gun Sisterhood.

Girls with guns... and character!
Revisado: 01-13-17
This is an impressive collection of novelettes and novellas with fully fleshed-out stories and three dimensional characters, all joined by the theme of women with guns. It's sometimes hard to believe that this was written by a man, because the female characters are very realistic. The female narrator also helps you feel that these stories, about many different women in totally different situations, that this is an all-female project. The feeling of realism and detail in so many different walks of life and different places makes you believe the author has had a lot of varied life experience.
My only problem with the stories is that they are a bit too perfectly wrapped up. Did I say a bit? Actually, every loose end is tied, every tiny hole is plugged, nothing is left in question. Real life simply isn't that way. But thr stories are good, suspenseful, and, in some cases, as sexy as the theme of girls with guns would naturally lead you to expect.

Reads like an exquisitely plotted mystery/suspense novel
Revisado: 12-01-16
This book is no small accomplishment. Starting with the crime scene of her mysteriously murdered father, Wallace takes us back to the beginning, when she had zero knowledge of her beloved father's alternative lifestyle. As she slowly learns the facts, so do we. Pieces of the puzzle are slowly put together, revealing more and more with still so much more to learn.
Learning the details of her father's alternative lifestyle is an unpleasant and distasteful experience for the reader -- but just imagine how much more awful it must have been for his own daughter! We share the journey with her.
The narrator's performance is flawless and easy to follow. The "plotting" is brilliant. This is a painfully honest book and an enriching, if painful, experience to read.
