The flight scenes were better than the movies
Revisado: 12-28-24
The found family aspect combined with the sco-fi and flight sequences made this an engaging listen. Mbot was a great tool and comic relief. The narrator did an excellent job. looking forward to listening to book 2.

Historia
What makes a romance novel a romance? Writing a well-structured romance isn't the same as writing any other genre - something the popular novel and screenwriting guides don't address. The romance arc is made up of its own story beats. Told in conversational (and often irreverent) prose, Romancing the Beat is like sitting down to coffee with romance editor and author Gwen Hayes while she explains story structure - the way she does with her clients, some of whom are regular inhabitants of the best-seller lists.

keep coming back
Revisado: 09-28-22
this short but to the point book is an alternative glance at story beats. i would recommend to start with save the cat for general view on beats, but if you are a romance writer, read this book next. it's a filter that magnifies the romance structure of a book, and interlaced with other more genre-agnotsic ones, will help with the romance arc. i keep re-reading it each time before i start planning for a new book. each refresher helps me identify new points and get a better feel for my romance arc. highly recommend.

to-the-point writing productivity advice
Revisado: 08-31-22
Chris Fox did an excellent job collecting a variety of writing productivity advice and putting it into a streamline system anyone can follow. He doesn't spend time talking about himself or generalities but presents you with actionable items you can follow. He reiterates some of the points a lot which could get redundant but I found that they were the right things to re-emphasize. A definite must-read for beginner or middle stage writers looking to increase their efficiency.

Paint your toes. Pick up the wrong coffee and bagel order. Drive from Brooklyn to Jersey in traffic so slow you want to tear your hair out. It’s amazing all the useless things I can accomplish while on hold for three hours with customer service. Three hours when I should be getting the Date-in-a-Box website ready to launch at the big business expo in a few days. Except my shiny new website is glitching, and my inner rage-monster is ready to scorch some earth...when he finally picks up. Not the robot voice I expected but a real live human named Kal.

Great refresher in Character Arcs
Revisado: 02-23-22
I've read enough books on the subject to not find all the info new, but the way it's packaged is helpful as a brush-up.
For thise new to character arcs, this is a good general place to start. The author mentions other books you can follow up with. The points and excercises at the end of each chapter helped me re-examine some of my character arc choices. Recommend.

Excellent resource for beginner writers
Revisado: 02-21-22
The book offers short and to the point informative writing craft advice.
The first part talks about what the title promises: Rachel's method of getting to 10K new words in about 6 hours of writing a day.
The second part is arguably even more important. Rachel talks about the prep work and plotting scaffolding that allows her to flow through her scenes.
The final portion discusses editing, because after the 1st daft is quickly completed, she follows up with about 3 rounds of self-edits before sending it off to agent/editor.
The writing style is clear, conversational, and fun.
I loved reading Rachel's last Dragon Standing series and knowing her process, I'm ready to apply it to my next book and have even more fun.

Lots of Gender Stereotypes
Revisado: 11-28-20
I started by liking the book. It has some solid advice on deep POV and good writing principles simply put with clear examples. That was until I got to the chapter on male vs female POV. It had so many stereotypes it turned me off. Listened to the rest of the book after, but couldn't get rid of the unpleasant feeling that chapter gave me and started noticing other biases present in the book.
I'd still recommend to read it to learn more on deep POV if you can separate the prejudice from actual useful advice.
