Not for me
Revisado: 09-29-24
Guess I should have read more reviews. I found the story to be silly, simplistic, and a bit childish. Not what I expected from such a well-known author.

Great audiobook!
Revisado: 01-15-22
Good story and very good narration. It's just confusing at first because of the alternation of the storyteller.

Historia
Richard Henry Dana, a law student turned sailor for health reasons, sailed in 1834 aboard the brig Pilgrim on a voyage from Boston around Cape Horn to California. Drawing from his journals, Two Years Before the Mast gives a vivid and detailed account, shrewdly observed and beautifully described, of a common sailor's wretched treatment at sea, and of a way of life virtually unknown at that time.

Fascinating History
Revisado: 05-27-21
Dana lived the life of many people who could read or write, giving us a look into the life of a sailor on a whaling ship. There is beauty, adventure, danger, and boredom. The glimpses of life in old California are surprising and interesting.

The first book written by C.S. Lewis after his conversion, The Pilgrim's Regress is, in a sense, a record of Lewis's own search for meaning and spiritual satisfaction that eventually led him to Christianity.

I like Lewis' other writings, but this kind of extended allegory I found to be just too pedantic and over-wrought.

Informative and clear
Revisado: 05-27-21
The professor is very knowledgeable and easy to understand. The lectures lay out clearly the development of this corner of the ancient world. The PDF isn't very helpful, being mainly just her lecture notes. It would have been nice to have some images of the things she describes.

Suspension of Disbelief
Revisado: 11-22-20
A good story, and the narration is good. The story fits together well and the characters are believable. It is only the premise of the story that an objective process contains a moral dimension that requires the reader to really suspend their disbelief and just go along.

Incredible Audiobook
Revisado: 11-21-20
Courtenay does not disappoint! I have listened to several of his books and this is among the best. It weaves strands from an Australian fishing village, the Korean War, Black American, Russian émigré, and Chinese peasant experiences into a believable and compelling story. It feels well-researched and authentic.
And Bower! What a narrator! He gives voice to all of the characters in a way that really brings them to life.

Not Up to the Title
Revisado: 09-16-20
It should be called "The Medieval World in England, and Bits About Other Places". The subject matter is told mainly though the history, literature, and culture of England. There are some parts that concern France, Spain, and Italy, but you would think that the medieval world didn't take place in the low countries, the Holy Roman Empire, or other parts of Europe. There are other audiobooks that cover the era better, like Bauer.

Surprisingly good
Revisado: 09-16-20
I took a chance on this because it seemed interesting, even though I am not a big fan of (auto)biography. It is really a fascinating story that is fresh, honest, and revealing. It is great that Remi narrates the book himself because his authentic voice comes through and makes it all the more genuine.

Historia
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

A Great Audiobook
Revisado: 09-16-20
This is what an audiobook should be. A compelling story, very well narrated. The author weaves together different characters in a non-chronological revelation that is hard to stop listening to. I kept finding myself making excuses to listen to more.
