Historia
Hetty Rhodes and her husband, Benjy, were Conductors on the Underground Railroad, ferrying dozens of slaves to freedom with daring, cunning, and magic that draws its power from the constellations. With the war over, those skills find new purpose as they solve mysteries and murders that White authorities would otherwise ignore. In the heart of Philadelphia’s Seventh Ward, everyone knows that when there’s a strange death or magical curses causing trouble, Hetty and Benjy are the only ones who can solve the case.

A beautiful tale with magic and mystery
Revisado: 02-01-22
This was a delightful time. I loved the characters, the world-building, and the mystery. The end grabs a hold of your heart. The narrator was superb. This book is worth your time.

Historia
Rags the thief has never met a pocket he couldn’t pick, but when he’s captured by a sorcerer with world-ending plans, he realizes even he is in over his head. Forced to use his finely honed skills to nab pieces of an ancient fae relic, Rags is stunned to discover that those “relics” just happen to be people: a distractingly handsome Fae prince, a too-honorable Queensguard deserter, a scrappy daughter of a disgraced noble family, a deceptively sweet-natured prince, a bona fide member of the Resistance, and him. Rags.

A delightful and romantic adventure
Revisado: 11-04-21
I love this work. Wonderful world-building, superb pacing, a delightful queer fantasy adventure. Each character thread builds toward a satisfactory conclusion, which can be tricky given the number of POV characters in this book. I am in love with how the authors are able to maintain a clipped pace in the plot, while slowly spooning out the creative details, very well done. Worth your time.

Historia
Gemma Ripley has a reputation for being a pampered princess who is more interested in pretty gowns, sparkling jewelry, and other frivolous things than learning how to rule the kingdom of Andvari. But her carefully crafted persona is just an act to hide the fact that Gemma is a powerful mind magier - and a spy. Gemma is undercover, trying to figure out who is stealing large amounts of tearstone from one of the Ripley royal mines when she encounters Prince Leonidas Morricone of Morta - her mortal enemy. She must reluctantly join forces with Leo....

A talented authors drab go at adventure fantasy
Revisado: 08-13-21
I think this title is a perfectly serviceable attempt at a magical adventure. I'm not rating it higher because I actually believe that the author is quite talented and that this book suffered from what I perceive as developmental help.
What I liked; fun world-building, intriguing magical powers, decent prose. I usually struggle with YA novels that are first person, but I liked our main character's narration (when I wasn't raging against plot problems).
What I could tell: Estep clearly understands the important threads for a good, fun adventure. You have lots of the pieces in place. The main character learns to overcome her past. Fun points of symmetry (two characters gaining the same scars, a return to a character-defining moment that the MC gets to conquering, completing her arc.) An understanding that past traumas are not easily recovered from. A character coming to change their perceptions of themself.
My disappointments: the pieces were there, they just didn't get it done for me. We're told that the main character is a talented spy masquerading as a spoiled princess. However, all of her actions are contrary to this declaration. It doesn't seem like this lack of skill is played for irony or some delusions of grandeur on the part of the MC, rather that she just forgot all her training just in time for the start of the novel. I understand that things need to be shaken up or surprising in order for there to be a plot, that it would be quite boring if the MC just won in the first 3 chapters, but wow was she bad. Most of the action is driven by the MC either being bad at her job or surprised that there might be treachery in the world. Gasp. I also get the sense that we're supposed to think of this character as a strong femme protagonist, but she basically spends the majority of the actions scenes being saved. Again, no irony or even sexism at work, but like the author wanted a badass girl boss, but then didn't know what to do after. Finally, the big climactic scene where our princess gets to learns that her strength and powers are enough to save her friends, but we don't get to enjoy it because the scene makes no sense!!! She finally makes it back to a city in her kingdom, full of royal guards and gargoyles that could help, and apparently, they were all magically MIA until after she throws down. Like literally minutes later her personal guard and soldiers arrive and no one's like "hey guys did you not see the invading mages massacring our people? were you on a lunch break?" I get you wanted the scene a certain way, but could make it even a little plausible?
I get the impression that this author has a decent grasp on good story structure, but like a freshman in college using a thesaurus to pad out their paper, uses plot devices because they should be there, not because they actually fit.
Just, so disappointing.

Historia
In the more shadowy corners of the world, frequented by angels and demons and everything in between, Laytham Ballard is a legend. It's said he raised the dead at the age of 10, stole the Philosopher's Stone in Vegas back in 1999, and survived the bloodsucking kiss of the Mosquito Queen. Wise in the hidden ways of the night, he's also a cynical bastard who stopped thinking of himself as the good guy a long time ago.

The intricate details of this paranormal world are obfuscated by the dullness of the plot and the tired rants of the main character.

An absolute pleasure and must read

What a fabulous beautiful book. Not only a tremendous tale with magic woven with intrigue, but an intervention into the lack of lgbtq characters in speculative fiction. Lush pros and gifted world building. Definitely an addition into the fantasy canon.
