Great story, pick a different version
Revisado: 11-18-23
I’ve never seen the play, I rather dislike musicals. But this was a fantastic book. Unfortunately, the reader’s voice isn’t great and some of the voices he does (particularly Thénardier’s) were like nails on a chalkboard. There were several other distractions I could hear, like him turning the pages, making smacking noises with his mouth (presumably wetting his lips), I swear I even heard a couple train horns. The recording is from ‘92, maybe they’ve gotten better about audiobook quality, maybe it was just not great for its time either.
Anyway, I would say it’s worth spending a credit to avoid this reading distracting from the enjoyment.

Historia
Mary Lennox, a spoiled, ill-tempered, and unhealthy child, comes to live with her reclusive uncle in Misselthwaite Manor after the death of her parents. With the help of a robin, Mary finds the door to a secret garden, neglected and hidden for years. When she decides to restore the garden in secret, the story becomes a charming journey into the places of the heart, where faith restores health, flowers refresh the spirit, and the magic of the garden brings happiness to Mary.

A bit too much of a children’s story but still good
Revisado: 11-11-23
I think my children would enjoy the story. I enjoyed it myself, even though it got to be a bit over the top for my tastes at times. Still, a fun read.
The narrator was just great. Did enough to add to the story, but not too much where it detracts from it. She did very well.

Historia
The Jungle is the story of Jurgis Rudkus, a Slavic immigrant who marries frail Ona Lukoszaite and seeks security and happiness as a workman in the Chicago stockyards. Once there, he is abused by foremen, his meager savings are filched by real estate sharks, and at every turn he is plagued by the misfortunes arising from poverty, poor working conditions, and disease. Finally, in accordance with Sinclair’s own creed, Rudkus turns to socialism as a way out.

A bit of propaganda
Revisado: 11-11-23
Upton Sinclair tells a story of a born loser whose every action and decision makes his situation worse, and uses it to say socialism is good.
There is some good descriptions of the misery of life around the turn of the century. The conditions of workers and the reality of packing plants are brought to life, Had Sinclair just stuck to writing a good insightful “expose” it would’ve been a better book.
Still the socialist messaging is fairly subtle through most of the story, up until the end where he pours it on heavily.
The reader was fine. Nothing outstanding, but frankly I prefer a narrator that doesn’t stand out and lets the literature speak for itself.

"For many days we had been tempest-tossed...the raging storm increased in fury until on the seventh day all hope was lost." So begins this delightful adventure story. The Robinson family, a Swiss pastor, his wife, and four sons, will emerge alive from this terrible storm, bringing to land two dogs and a shipload of livestock: hens, pigeons, and geese.

Not as good as I hoped for
Revisado: 11-11-23
It’s almost a continuous deux ex machina. I suppose it may be good for a kids imagination, but it’s just over the top.
The reader isn’t horrible, but wasn’t good.
All in all, I suggest passing and finding something good.

Now this is a good book
Revisado: 08-25-23
I’ve been running through the “classics” and frankly have been left disappointed more often than I’d like. This was Hemingways last chance for me, after not thinking highly of The Sun Also Rises and The Old Man and The Sea.
Here, he creates connections to the reader. I was genuinely interested in how things would play out. Sure, the title clearly foreshadows things, but even knowing how it will end, the journey is the real joy.
This title should be the go-to Hemingway.
As for the narrator, he did his job and didn’t get in the way of the story. Perfectly satisfied.

Historia
Fyodor Dostoyevsky is a titanic figure among the world's great authors, and The Brothers Karamazov is often hailed as his finest novel. A masterpiece on many levels, it transcends the boundaries of a gripping murder mystery to become a moving account of the battle between love and hate, faith and despair, compassion and cruelty, good and evil.

Good story, better of two narrators
Revisado: 08-25-23
There was another free version I just couldn’t handle. This one was so much better.
I heard so much good about this title that I really looked forward to it. It didn’t live up to the hype. It was a fine story, with drama and undertones and all. But it never really peaked for me and thus never piqued me.
I think I enjoyed Crime and Punishment just a bit more, but even that one didn’t blow me away. I think that’s enough Dostoevsky for me.
Again, the narrator is by far better than the free one. Worth the credit for the length of time you’re with him.

Historia
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

A high school lit class staple
Revisado: 08-25-23
It’s a perfectly fine story. But not great. It’s probably shoveled onto juniors simply because it’s Hemingway and short.
I really tuned in more for Donald Sutherland. What a voice and personality. I was a touch disappointed. He didn’t knock my socks off; it almost seemed like he stumbled reading at times.
If you want Hemingway, I recommend For Whom the Bell Tolls. Much better. Mucho mejor. Que va.

The unapologetic intensity with which Emily Brontë wrote this story ensures that it will forever be considered one of the greatest works of English literature. A passionate tale of a chaotic and often violent love, Wuthering Heights transcends your average romance and, with its Gothic undertones, takes the listener on a journey through one man's lustful hunt for revenge.

See “Gothic” in the dictionary
Revisado: 08-25-23
Wuthering Heights is not what I expected. I went in expecting something like Pride and Prejudice, or a Nicholas Sparks equivalent. Definitely different.
I guess it could be a love story. A twisted, disturbing love. I think it was well written enough, and never thought “that character wouldn’t do that.” And I’m not one that wants a sappy love story. But I can’t say I really enjoyed this. And especially for the first half, it seemed disjointed. Whether the plot smoothed or I just got used to it, I’m not sure. Still, overall it’s a heckuva lot better than Frankenstein.
If you want something a bit different, give it a go. But Jane Eyre, cliched as it might be by todays standards, is simply the better Brontë sister book.
The reader/narrator did fine; no complaints there.

Historia
First published in monthly parts from March 1852 to September 1853, this novel follows the fortunes of three pedestrian characters; Esther Summerson, Ada Clare, and Richard Carstone. The story they tell embondies Dickens' merciless indictment of the Court of Chancery and its bungling, morally corrupt handling of the endless case of Jarndyce v. Jarndyce, giving the novel its scope and meaning.

Not Dickens best, but ended well
Revisado: 08-25-23
By no means was this a bad book, but it certainly isn’t one of Dickens best. There I’d point towards Great Expectations. But Bleak House is better than his first couple works (Pickwick, ugh). If you love Dickens, you’ll like Bleak House. I do like that he introduced the word “growlery” in this book. But, alas, the word didn’t stick.
The narrator did a fine job. Nothing to complain about there.
SPOILER ALERT:
The best thing about Bleak House is that it doesn’t wrap up with a happily ever after for everyone. Which is a bit refreshing.

Historia
Don Quixote, the world's first novel and by far the best-known book in Spanish literature, was originally intended by Cervantes as a satire on traditional popular ballads, yet he also parodied the romances of chivalry. By happy coincidence he produced one of the most entertaining adventure stories of all time and, in Don Quixote and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, two of the greatest characters in fiction.

A bit disappointed
Revisado: 06-21-23
When one thinks of literary classics, Don Quixote must certainly be included. Unfortunately, I can’t say the actual product lives up to the reputation.
Sure, I chuckled a couple of times, but more often I found myself with drifting thoughts. The story just wasn’t that engrossing.
Read it/listen to it for your own experience. Just don’t go in with great expectations (side note: if you want an excellent book, Dickens’ Great Expectations will deliver).
Frankly I was very close to abandoning the reading, which I never do. On top of it, Don Quixote followed Count of Monte Cristo in my playlist, so it was a hard act to follow. And it fumbled and flailed trying.
The narrator isn’t bad; he did well enough with the material. Certainly wasn’t bad, but wasn’t fantastic either.
There are better ways to spend 37 hours, but at least at the end you can say you know Don Quixote. Not 100% sure it’s worth it.
