Ugh!
Revisado: 09-22-22
No. This story is awful. I gave it several chapters, but I can't take it. I don't even care anymore how it might end. It's disjointed and written in a way that leaves you confused and wondering how this one thing is suddenly happening, when 2 words ago this completely other thing was happening. It's amateurish writing, the characters are flat as cardboard and act in ways that make absolutely no sense. It's not even worth the sale price I got it for. I'll be returning it to get my $3 back.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

This was a wonderfully entertaining story and I loved everything about it. The narrator was fantastic, even with all the characters.

When the witch built the 40-flight tower, she made very sure to do the whole thing properly. Each flight contains a dreadful monster, ranging from a diamond-scaled dragon to a pack of slavering goblins. Should a prince battle his way to the top, he will be rewarded with a golden sword - and the lovely Princess Floralinda. But no prince has managed to conquer the first flight yet, let alone get to the 40th. In fact, the supply of fresh princes seems to have quite dried up.

Very entertaining!
Revisado: 09-05-22
I really enjoyed this story, it was very entertaining. The only thing I didn't care for was the ending. That was kind of a letdown to the whole thing. I would still recommend it tho, as overall, it is a lot of fun.

There was a time when the woods near Duva ate girls - or so the story goes. But it's just possible that the danger may be a little bit closer to home. This story is a companion folk tale to Leigh Bardugo's debut novel, Shadow and Bone.

So bad
Revisado: 06-19-22
Plot holes all over the place coupled with characters making stupid decisions and, of course, complete predictability. On the plus side, some of the dialog was mildly amusing.

This was extremely entertaining! I understand why some reviewers were turned off by the sound effects, but I thought they were great. In places where they drowned out the words, context still made it clear what was happening.

All he wants to do is get high, relax with a good sandwich, and watch a meteor shower with his neighborhood crush, Jen. Started great..
Revisado: 07-18-21
The first part of this story was entertaining, but then it started to nosedive and by the end all I could do was roll my eyes and wish it was over already. If he hadn't included the dog in all of it, I would have probably given more stars, but I thought that pushed it into the realm of ridiculous and the story would have been better off without it.
As far as narration, you can't possibly go wrong with R.C. Bray!

Just a preachy religious fiction
Revisado: 07-08-21
I actually enjoyed the first part of this book, it was kind of slow but the characters were interesting. It is definitely not a thriller, it is just a religious fiction that turns over the top sappy/preachy towards the end, It is very rare for me not to finish a book but this one went from "I wonder what will happen" to "I'd rather have a root canal than keep listening to this".. Had it been categorized correctly, I never would have wasted my time. Returning.

Apparently I am in the minority here but..
Revisado: 03-31-21
This book was pretty bad. There are a couple high-level spoilers in here, and I apologize, but I can't properly complain without including them.
First, it's a bit misogynistic. Why were there no females in the crew? No females in charge of anything? Why would the girl show her romantic interest by cooking our hero a special meal per "tradition"? (eye roll) Really? We are hundreds (thousands?) of years in the future, and this is how she flirts? The 19th century called and they want their "tradition" back.
Second, this story takes place at a time where space travel is normal, and technology has clearly passed that of today.. and yet - apparently nothing of any cultural interest has happened since 1980. That leads me to Brody, possibly the most interesting character and R.C. Bray (naturally) does him perfectly; however.. it's annoying that Brody has all the Rambo one-liners at the ready, because he has spent (centuries?) watching old movies out of boredom.. and again - have there been no movies made since then? Did their original ship start out with centuries worth of films, but in the crash all movies except those on VHS were wiped out? Also, if Brody spoke English so well, why didn't the other survivors also speak English?
Third, this ship has spent an unclear number of centuries floating around (presumably) en route to the planet, but nobody came across it? The area had since been thoroughly explored, but everyone missed the ship? (If that was explained I admit I missed it). When the crew sent a message to earth, they weren't surprised that the return message wasn't all flabbergasted that this "long lost" ship and crew reappeared "999" years (probably not the actual amount of years, but it's really unclear) after they were presumed dead? Seems someone might have at least raised an eyebrow, maybe both sides could have asked for some kind proof or something, but the crew sent a message and a message was returned and everyone shrugged.
Lastly, since it's been (999?) years since our fateful crew woke up on this planet, it doesn't seem like much has happened, technologically speaking, anyway. Other than the unlikely "we want your AI because it's better than ours" issue.. their weapons, communications, etc all seem to be just about the same as what the crew has (and their weapons were already ancient).. which is interesting, because if you took someone from 999 years ago and plopped them in any town today, there would be many many technological changes that person would undoubtedly be taken aback by.. but.. well.. maybe technology (much like cinema and culture) is just stuck in centuries past.
As I mentioned, R.C. Bray is brilliant, as always.. but, even if he's reading it, I'll have to pass on the sequel.

Ok but..

This was a nice story with lots of twists but I tend to get annoyed by "bad guy confessions" and this was full of them, which kind or ruined it for me.
