Carro pulls this latest book on the life of LBJ and teaches us much about John and Bobby Kennedy. It is an amazing book.

A fictional account of the way it most often is. Grisham concurs in his final analysis.

I loved the narrative style of this true to life story of epic legal battle where in the end justice prevails.

This book greatly expands on my knowledge of Toussaint Louverture the mythic liberator of Colonial Haiti. Haiti was a French slave colony which wrested goods and wealth on the backs of people stolen from Africa to the benefit of the people of France through the brutal and inhumane system of slavery.

Most of the now so civilized nations of Europe were not to long ago the most wretched people on earth, who learned to justify that which they would not tolerate and built their now wealthy countries by subjecting their brothers and sisters. Having gained the benefit of these ill gotten gains the same nations preach civility while occasionally overthrowing whatever rickety attempts at self government which might spring in the wake of their regimes.

If you want to understand Haitian history I strongly recommend this book.

This book has inspired me on multiple occasions to sit down and get started, keep going when I feel I can’t. King is a master of description using plain words to express big moving ideas, and his writing has helped me use simple words rather than words that may cause the reader to put down my story to look up a word to be able to continue. He has taught me to right from the heart.

If you want to write I highly recommend this book because it illustrates story telling while teaching the same.

I read the Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo after learning the Author had roots in Haiti. Those books did little explain Dumas origins and so upon enjoying them back to back I turned back to life as it is day to day.

For years I had pursued the ghost of another whose humble origins sprung from Haiti as many of my fathers and mothers before me. That ghost was embodied in the world of Ornithology, in an artistic endeavor that reflectively now seems outsized for any mans life, that being the work of John James Audubon.

In a conversation with a Professor Dunn while hurtling in my SUV down I95 towards Richmond, VA where I was to speak the next day on matters ornithology as they relate to the ancient Art of Falconry. Our conversation meandered past his request for me to appear next year at an event on his campus with my birds, which due to conflict nor budget would I likely make.

Dunn’s inquiry was unusual , I know not why but In the course of our conversation I found we were striking the same cord and so we both recommend books and articles to further enlighten each other of our various threads.

I recommended John James Audubon: The Nature of the American Woodsman , by Gregory Nobles. Dunn recommend The Black Count, by Tom Reiss, and for that I shall always be grateful. The Black Count explains the Origins of the Dumas most literate people know and unearths the subject of Dumas most famous works.

It is of great interest to me how History can hide story’s of origin that do not fit the narrative that those who generally command the writing of history seem to want to gloss over. As to Audubon my stepmother early in my life told me of his origins but it did not compute. The forwards of at least one copy of “Birds of America hinted at what Nobles unearths and makes plain what the Audubon Society keeps in back ground, and what Richard Rhodes glosses over and in my estimation dissembles, consciously or unconsciously the double life of Audubon.

I highly recommend the Black Count and tonight ordered five copies, one to re-read and the others to give as gifts to members of my family.

A rich complex tapestry of intertwined lives, loss, memories, regrets, amnesia, psychological scars, and longing for lost love.

Pat Conroy is one of my favorite modern authors and Frank Muller becomes Pat’s voice through the characters in the book.

This book will expand what you don’t give a fuck about but in a good way. Well written and well said by Mark Mason, who like my wife reminds me “I am not the JERK Whisperer,” so only in the spirt of this book - “HATERS” Fuck Off, I have more serious and fun things to do with my time than deal with you bullshit! #lifeofthefalconer
