Historia
For Alisa Brimley, editor of the small magazine Christian Voice, receiving a letter from a longtime subscriber might otherwise be a perfectly normal occasion—except Stella Rode, the reader in question, writes that her husband is planning to kill her. Brimley calls upon an old wartime friend to help her investigate: retired Circus spy, George Smiley. Before Smiley can begin, Rode is found murdered, and Brimley asks Smiley to venture to the small town of Carne, home of the elite Carne School where Rode's husband is a public school junior master.

Not my favorite Smiley mystery. These early short ones never quite do the trick for me.

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

An excellent book but not my favorite of his
Revisado: 06-16-24
I’ve read all of Erik Larson’s books. Like his others, this one is meticulously researched but reads like a work of dramatic fiction. This one was not my favorite, however.
Somehow it lacked for me the suspense of his prior books. I can’t put my finger on why — perhaps the subject matter was too familiar? Or the parallels to current division in the US too abundant? I learned some new things and am glad I read it but, still, not my fav Larson!

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Entertaining delivery
Revisado: 03-17-24
Took me a little while to get into the story but appreciated how the various storylines intersected and came together in the end. Not an especially upbeat book but enjoyed the different communities and their histories.

Historia
A landslide has closed the Korowai Pass on New Zealand’s South Island, cutting off the town of Thorndike and leaving a sizable farm abandoned. The disaster presents an opportunity for Birnam Wood, an undeclared, unregulated, sometimes-criminal, sometimes-philanthropic guerrilla gardening collective that plants crops wherever no one will notice. For years, the group has struggled to break even. To occupy the farm at Thorndike would mean a shot at solvency at last. But the enigmatic American billionaire Robert Lemoine also has an interest in the place.

Enjoyed until…

…the bizarre and abrupt finale. It almost felt like the author ran out of interest in the story and just had to find a quick way to finish. I had higher hopes for a creative resolution!

Historia
Growing up on the Navajo Indian Reservation, David Crow and his siblings idolized their dad. Tall, strong, smart, and brave, the self-taught Cherokee regaled his family with stories of his World War II feats. But as time passed, David discovered the other side of Thurston Crow, the ex-con with his own code of ethics that justified cruelty, violence, lies - even murder. A shrewd con artist with a genius IQ, Thurston intimidated David with beatings to coerce him into doing his criminal bidding. David's mom, too mentally ill to care for her children, couldn't protect him.

Much too long
Revisado: 07-17-20
The book spends far too much time recounting repetitive stories from the narrator’s childhood that do not seem necessary to advancing the narrative about the family’s deep dysfunction. Pretty early on, we get it: The dad is an abusive, controlling, cruel, selfish, and delusional criminal. The mom is abused and unwell. The kids have to find ways to survive. Repeat for hours. Then suddenly they move from abject poverty of the reservation to suburban affluence in Montgomery County, Md. outside of DC for a training and promotion opportunity that seems to fall out of the sky and into the deadbeat dad’s lap. It’s an unexpected and strange twist, but a welcome change of pace and location after the first several monotonous hours. The final hour(ish) is the most enjoyable of the book, I found, as their lives seem to finally move forward and onward after like 30 years of the same mistreatment and misery. The narrator, especially, finally reaches some conclusions about his life that he probably could have reached about 3.5 hours into the audiobook, even in his teens. Ultimately, I was happy to learn how the story ended for David and his siblings, but I wish this audiobook had been about half the total length.
