The PoGcast is a podcast run by Pillar of Garbage and TSD Talks, where we talk about the content on the Pillar of Garbage YouTube channel as well as the general landscape around discussing TV, Movies, and other media. The whole idea came from a bad pun, we know.

Historia
The talented, confident, and intelligent son of John of Gaunt, Henry IV started his reign as a popular and charismatic king after he dethroned the tyrannical and wildly unpopular Richard II. But six years into his reign, Henry had survived eight assassination and overthrow attempts. Having broken God's law of primogeniture by overthrowing the man many people saw as the chosen king, Henry IV left himself vulnerable to challenges from powerful enemies about the validity of his reign. Even so, Henry managed to establish the new Lancastrian dynasty and a new rule of law.

Reads Like a Novel But With Lots More Info
Revisado: 01-25-23
Everything I’ve read or listened to from Ian Mortimer has been fantastic. He writes in a very accessible way—one can work the whole day, make dinner for the kids, then sit back and have a nice relaxing read. YET…somehow Mortimer packs loads of historical info and personal details about people who lived hundred of years ago. Henry IV is no exception. It’s an an amazing book that anyone who’s interested in history should read.
Henry IV is brought to life in a way that sometimes makes him feel like an old friend from college you haven’t seen in years. The reader learns about Henry’s ambitions & his fears & that the guy had a massive sweet tooth! Further, the world Henry inhabited is layered richly: family relations & tensions, politics, religion, economics, warfare—it’s all there. The book outlines the tragic relationship between King Richard & Henry before he was King & while obviously written from Henry’s perspective Mortimer makes the reader really feel for both men.
This book is both fun and educational. I really think any history buff will enjoy it!

Historia
By the time of his death on July 23, 1885, Ulysses S. Grant was an icon in the historical memory of the United States. Just a few decades later, however, constant criticism of his military and political leadership had tarnished his reputation. Today’s historians have a far more balanced assessment of Grant as a Union Army general and an American president—and that appraisal is at the heart of Understanding Ulysses S. Grant: Portrait of a Warrior.

Informative & Entertaining Course
Revisado: 01-04-23
This course nicely outlines several chapters in US Grants life, providing historical context to him as a soldier, general, and politician. Enough biographical information is provided for listeners to get a firm understanding of his views on the civil war itself as well as the reconstruction period which followed. It’s a comparatively short course but covers the subject matter well.

Historia
Henry of Monmouth, Prince Hal, is barely recovered from a near-fatal wound when his father leaves him to retake his land. Owain Glendower and Edmund Mortimer, however, have French allies and the most inhospitable landscape to aid them. All that Prince Hal has to guide him is the guardian of kings, Will Strongstaff. The two of them have to fight treachery and those who count money as well as more traditional enemies, the Welsh archers.

A solid, fun read.
Revisado: 10-08-22
This is the second of Mr Hosker’s books I’ve listened to on Audible. The story is very enjoyable—well paced with plenty of action, humor, & character interaction to keep the listener engaged. The characters themselves are a bit tropic but fit well enough within the narrative. The story generally follows what I know of as the history of the period with the fictional protagonist being at the center of important events. The story includes real historical figures including king Henry IV, Henry of Monmouth (later Henry V), the earl of northumberland & a few other Percy’s, & John the fearless of Burgundy. The personalities of some of these figures don’t mesh with what I’ve read about them but but I’m no expert. I think most people who find this period of history interesting should give this book & author a try: they’d likely enjoy it.
