Historia
After receiving unexpected inheritance from her grandfather, Mercy and her twin sister Lizzie are now the proud owners of a charming antique bookshop in the tiny Irish village of Shamrock Cove. But before they can take in the beautiful view of the sea, one of their neighbors drops dead! Mercy finds the Judge, a well-respected man who lives next door, dying on his own doorstep. She rushes to help, but with his final words, he accuses Mercy of murder! Most of their new neighbors hear his words and, with suspicion pointing at Mercy, she decides to investigate the case to clear her name.

Distracting performance
Revisado: 04-22-25
Loved the setting but story meandered and the performance was obnoxious and flip—not appropriate to the tone the story could have had. Every line was read like a sarcastic whine.

Historia
January, 2003. Together with the usual holiday cards, an anonymous postcard is delivered to the Berest family home. On the front, a photo of the Opéra Garnier in Paris. On the back, the names of Anne Berest’s maternal great-grandparents, Ephraïm and Emma, and their children, Noémie and Jacques—all killed at Auschwitz. Fifteen years after the postcard is delivered, Anne, the heroine of this novel, is moved to discover who sent it and why.

Devastating
Revisado: 04-16-24
Loved the combination of history, interesting characters, personal stories, and the mystery of the postcard. The plot and braiding of the stories made it very suspenseful.

Historia
A reluctant ex-spy with demons of her own, Elinor finds herself facing down one of the most dangerous organized crime gangs in London, ultimately exposing corruption from Scotland Yard to the highest levels of government. The private, quiet “Miss White" as Elinor is known, lives in a village in rural Kent, England, and to her fellow villagers seems something of an enigma. Well she might, as Elinor occupies a "grace and favor" property, a rare privilege offered to faithful servants of the Crown for services to the nation.

Narrator ruined it
Revisado: 05-24-23
The narrator’s performance was too genteel and whispery. Really grated. It didn’t suit the story and diminished the action and especially main character, making her come off as prissy and delicate. Story overall couldn’t seem to decide on a consistent tone. Some portions seemed realistic and dramatic, others like a quaint, tongue-and-cheek fairy tale. Wish I hadn’t wasted my time.

Historia
This is a darkly hilarious coming-of-age novel and a richly plotted suspense tale told through the distinctive voice of its heroine, Blue van Meer. After a childhood spent moving from one academic outpost to another with her father, Blue is clever and possessed of a vast lexicon of knowledge. But when a drowning and the shocking death of a teacher lead to a confluence of mysteries, Blue is left to make sense of it all with only her gimlet-eyed instincts and cultural references to guide - or misguide - her.

Too purple
Revisado: 02-03-22
The overuse of analogies and metaphors becomes really tiresome. The story becomes more compelling near the end but takes a long time to get there and there doesn’t seem to be anyone to root for among all the characters. Probably better read rather than listened to. The narrator feels one note emotionally. She also has trouble pronouncing a lot of words so isn’t convincing as the main character which is important with first person.

Historia
One hundred and fifty years ago, Chawton was the final home of Jane Austen, one of England's finest novelists. Now, it's home to a few distant relatives and their diminishing estate. With the last bit of Austen's legacy threatened, a group of disparate individuals come together to preserve both Jane Austen's home and her legacy. These people - a laborer, a young widow, the local doctor, and a movie star, among others - could not be more different and yet they are united in their love for the works and words of Austen.

Disappointing
Revisado: 08-25-20
Overall I found the story very tedious. It seemed unconvincing that the characters would make many of the choices they make, so I had trouble caring much about them. I love period pieces but the author completely lost me with dialogue like “I can’t speak to that” and “It’s all good” —trendy phrases that no one would have uttered in the ‘40s. The audio performance of the characters’ dialogue made everyone sound exhausted and annoyed.
