Historia
George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

Good Star Wars story
Revisado: 06-17-24
Enjoyable to see the fall of the Jedi from the start of the Clone Wars from the perspective of a Padawan. The main character was a moody teenager, easily manipulated, and longing to find her “true self” and thoroughly convinced everyone is trying to halt that. The author may have uncovered a universal truth applicable to modern day.

These are fabulous works of historical fiction. Thoroughly enjoy the characters, the storylines, and learning about this time period. Also so interesting to hear these characters dealing with the challenges of their day without knowing how much worse things would become.

Historia
In Sacrifice, Rene Girard interrogates the Brahmanas of Vedic India, exploring coincidences with mimetic theory that are too numerous and striking to be accidental. The Bible reveals collective violence, similar to that which generates sacrifice everywhere, but instead of making victims guilty, the Bible and the Gospels reveal the persecutors of a single victim. Instead of elaborating myths, they tell the truth absolutely contrary to the archaic sense.

Historia
In 2014, the world witnessed the start of a mysterious series of cyberattacks. Targeting American utility companies, NATO, and electric grids in Eastern Europe, the strikes grew ever more brazen. They culminated in the summer of 2017, when the malware known as NotPetya was unleashed, penetrating, disrupting, and paralyzing some of the world's largest businesses—from drug manufacturers to software developers to shipping companies. At the attack's epicenter in Ukraine, ATMs froze. The railway and postal systems shut down. Hospitals went dark.

Informative
Revisado: 07-03-23
This is an informative piece, acutely focused on Russian cyber espionage and cyberattacks. Not much mention of China, DPRK, or Iran except as additional bit characters in all things Russia. May be nitpicking but the repeated term “election hacking” is annoying. The author interchanges a hack of the DNC email servers and ads on social media with “election hacking”. A bit more exculpatory information - like the status of Mueller indictments - would be helpful and actually strengthen one’s argument. Otherwise a solid piece of work on this domain.

Historia
In Dark Towers, award-winning journalist David Enrich reveals the truth about Deutsche Bank and its epic path of devastation. Tracing the bank's history back to its propping up of a default-prone American developer in the 1880s, helping the Nazis build Auschwitz, and wooing Eastern Bloc authoritarians, he shows how in the 1990s, via a succession of hard-charging executives, Deutsche made a fateful decision to pursue Wall Street riches, often at the expense of ethics and the law.

Good not great
Revisado: 08-14-22
This is a well researched story of DB, although at times it stretches things just a bit. The author makes a fairly clear presentation of the generally bad culture at the top levels of the firm. The Trump aspects are partly interesting and partly catnip for readers who want it.
The main issue was the conflating of one-off incidents with disparate scandals to create a grander conspiracy. In the end, the exercise is more intimated than explicitly connected, so it works well as a mostly factual rendering of the bank’s troubles.
Lot of junk food for those already inclined to enjoy some of these villains.
