Historia
At once a powerful evocation of his early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice to both the individual and the body politic, James Baldwin galvanized the nation in the early days of the civil rights movement with this eloquent manifesto. The Fire Next Time stands as one of the essential works of our literature.

A great read on many levels. Depth of wisdom and heart. A vision to hold on to, and a fire next time that he says we could avoid only if we wake up to what’s needed. Good narration too.

Historia
Anne Gallagher grew up enchanted by her grandfather’s stories of Ireland. Heartbroken at his death, she travels to his childhood home to spread his ashes. There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time. The Ireland of 1921, teetering on the edge of war, is a dangerous place in which to awaken. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar.

I stumbled on this and I’m so grateful. I went back to read some of her other books too. This is the best. The history , the writing, the story and the narration are top notch.
I keep coming back to it. Just finished a third listen.

In a time of social and ecological crisis, what can we as individuals do to make the world a better place? This inspirational and thought-provoking book serves as an empowering antidote to the cynicism, frustration, paralysis, and overwhelm so many of us are feeling, replacing it with a grounding reminder of what’s true: we are all connected, and our small, personal choices bear unsuspected transformational power.

Great points, for white Americans
Revisado: 05-15-19
I think he is an important messenger and this book captures important points. But his use of “we” is bothersome. He acts like he is speaking for all but what he really refers to by “we” is “we white middle class Americans” but he doesn’t acknowledge that, which I find naive. He is not aware that he is not talking about others’ perspectives. People of color have known for much longer how off our society is and how much they have suffered. It is only white people who are newly waking up to the falseness of the American ideal.
While I’m finding the book very good in many respects it is hard to keep listening when that fundamental “we” error is on every page. I feel torn because I think it could have been a brilliant book otherwise. I wish he would revise and acknowledge who this is for. Without that it’s a big slap in the face for people of color.

Don’t miss this one.
As a career coach, I recommend it to my clients now. She captures how to make a life and choose a career path, among other wise words.
And the powerful messages about race, class, sexism, are shared in a way that anyone could understand and appreciate. She has a gentle strength.
And to learn more about Barack was fascinating too. An important piece of history.
Enjoy!

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

I hope you read this. It's important. It brings hard news into heartwarming real life stories with lots of love.
Good for all audiences teen to adults of all ages.
I am picky about books and narration. This gets my highest review.
If you tend to avoid violence and swearing and hard stuff, don't let that scare you away. it's worth it. Nothing is gratuitous. There's more heart than anything. I loved all the characters.

Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is 12 hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story. Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that.

Enjoyable and good handling of racism and immigration backdrop too. Predictable.

Somewhat trite but still held my interest to the end. I liked all the characters. I liked the handling of race and immigrant issues and family dynamics and definitely refreshing over typical white-centric novels.
