Narrator sounded like a comedian doing a compassionate take on what could be an awkward topic. Really worth a listen for the ideas and way they’re presented.

Fun Performance and story, equally interesting as science fact or fiction

The voice really sounds like it suits a character like Lazar, slightly nerdy but scientifically motivated and inquisitive and mischievous. The story itself is so interesting as either fiction or not. Feels like it should be a TV miniseries or something like that.

His disdain for cis hetero males

I really wanted to like Ian Kerner’s books because they are often recommended to people like me who would like to improve their sex lives. When I say “people like me” I’m a straight male in a relationship with a straight female. Yet when I read this, I just get this sense that he does not like hetero males (even though he says he is one) and has more fondness and empathy for the gay couples in this book. I just felt like he kept accusing me of things i was not, just because I’m a hetero male.

That being said, I appreciate the information in the book about sex scripts. That felt like worthwhile, useful information to think about when having sex. It’s a tool that I think people would find useful learning about in this book and then discussing it more with a therapist and sex therapist.

Lastly, I really wish this dude would stop narrating his own books. I just find his voice annoying, like getting sex advice from a high schooler selling me popcorn at the movie box office. His voice sounds like what I imagine Jared Kushner’s voice sounds like.

So I would recommend this book definitely to women and gay couples, and slightly less so to straight men. After listening to both this and reading She Comes First, yes it’s good information (conveniently in one place, but nothing absolutely new or groundbreaking) I’m still wishing I could find a sex self-help writer who doesn’t make me feel ashamed to be a straight male.

Sophisticated writing but not condescending, lots of really cool ideas discussed

The writing refreshingly feels like at least college level and not dumbed down at all, it actually makes me feel smarter understanding, although I did repeat some parts. The broad range of topics and really interesting ideas discussed was also cool, a lot of the speculation about the extratempestrials/extraterrestrials was a lot more science-based than the average UFO book I’ve read. Also really liked hearing his commentary on scientific concepts that have been around for awhile, like the double-slit experiment, or closed timelike curves. I love reading the bestseller pop science books and really enjoyed this. Also really cool that he reads it himself, that’s always like a rockstar thing to do, makes it sound more real.

The title is edgy and dark, so definitely appealed to how I feel right now

The writing sounded really heartfelt and not like the “motivational speaker” or “megachurch pastor” style that sometimes comes through with even well-meaning self-help authors. Very not-judgmental and accepting, like it did sound like it was written by an experienced therapist. Also liked the techie and gaming references. Honestly, I really thought the title was cool too, it sounded to me like something Kurt Cobain would use as a song title, but the book ultimately had a hopeful message.
