Such a clever, deeply human story!
Revisado: 08-14-24
Dean Koontz is known for his suspenseful or scary books and in my opinion he rivals Stephen King! This book moves away from that track just enough to make room for this imaginative, original book. It's a survival story, a biography, a historical fiction, a sci-fi adventure, a beautiful love story within a love story, and it's a well-written account of what it is to endure, to forgive, to hold fast, to love unconditionally, and to be human. I recommend it very highly.

High potential, kinda disappointing overall
Revisado: 08-02-24
This book on its surface seemed to have great potential for a story, for a clever, romantic spin on an ancient pagan legend. It became apparent very quickly, however, that the story this author wanted to tell was 1: too "dark" and "steamy" for her ability or comfort level as a writer. 2: a place to sneak Christianity into what is, at its root, NOT a myth where Christianity ought to be.
I understand and respect creative license and typically I love it when people can put a different spin on things. But this attempt made the story itself go... crunchy. Pre-Roman Scottish tradition and folklore has already been pirated enough, it just didn't vibe for me to see it done to fae creatures too. Making Kelpies somehow a Hebrew thing? Just... not respectful. It would be like making the story of Jesus Christ into a Wendigo story instead.
Also, as an opinion of personal taste more than anything else, the love interest(s) both were just as Bella Swan as the MC. If romance is spice, this book's romance is flour.

In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power - the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion. Thus begins J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic tale of adventure, which continues in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

oh, Mr Serkis: my beloved
Revisado: 03-08-24
So. As everyone knows, Lord of the Rings is the pinnacle of fantasy and I think I can safely assume everyone knows it's an excellent story and while the movies are fantastic, experiencing the movies and not also the books is like leaving the table without having dessert. Like... yes, you should read them. In other news, water is wet and sunrise is east.
The narration for this rendition is by Andy Serkis, who the nerds among you will know played Gollum in the LOTR films. He does an incredible job here, with his naturally deep husky voice rising and falling to portray characters and the energy of the scenes-- the perfect voice for storytelling. Also his Tom Bombadil is #choice and overall I'm thrilled that I stumbled upon this audio book.
You deserve it. As a treat.

A true hidden gem of a read!
Revisado: 01-20-24
This book, and the entire Temeraire series, is fantastic. The writing style is time period-authentic, the story flows effortlessly, the historical accuracy is surprisingly on par, and you can't help but fall in love with the characters. If you're looking for your "what next?" book after Lord of the Rings, Eragon, or Fourth Wing, then look NO FURTHER!
