Historia
Patric Gagne realized she made others uncomfortable before she started kindergarten. Something about her caused people to react in a way she didn’t understand. She suspected it was because she didn’t feel things the way other kids did. Emotions like fear, guilt, and empathy eluded her. For the most part, she felt nothing. And she didn’t like the way that “nothing” felt.

I hung on long enough hoping the author might provide any mature, insightful, nuanced, or even mildly interesting opinions/observations. Or at least have a literary purpose for the narrator’s elementary, contrived story telling. Sad to see she thinks her semantic games and incredibly terrestrial escapades are worth documenting. A Buddhist sociopath?!?!?
Bland, superficial, and solipsistic….but what can you expect from someone who displays a life long fascination with nothing but herself? If she wasn’t an incredibly privileged white woman living on the west coast, she would just be a petty criminal whose thoughts would be confined to a prison cell.
You’re not special, “Patric,” you are just a self centered asshole.
Narrator (author) is hard to listen to due to her obvious narcissism and condescension, but for someone with a lack of emotional depth, she sure captures the feelings in the voices of her subjects.

Historia
In the midst of a historic "birth dearth," why do some 5 percent of American women choose to defy the demographic norm by bearing five or more children? Hannah’s Children is a compelling portrait of these overlooked but fascinating mothers who, like the biblical Hannah, see their children as their purpose, their contribution, and their greatest blessing. The social scientist Catherine Pakaluk, herself the mother of eight, traveled across the United States and interviewed fifty-five college-educated women who were raising five or more children.

Propaganda dressed up as research.
Revisado: 04-22-24
I had assumed this book was based on actual scientific research. Rather, the author confuses research with anecdotes and reveals her obvious bias and tendency to oversimplify complex social phenomena. She has a caveat about being “blessed” with 8 children and that she knows her work might be triggering or upsetting to individuals with fewer or no children. She even claims an N of one is somehow valid research. Hoo boy!
If you want to feel justified in wanting or having a big family, maybe read this. She only offers a limited perspective from an entirely unrepresentative sample, so maybe don’t read it unless you are one of these rare, super rational wonder women with means to support a large family,

Historia
Jill and Derick knew a normal life wasn’t possible for them. As a star on the popular TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, Jill grew up in front of viewers who were fascinated by her family’s way of life. She was the responsible, second daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle’s nineteen kids; always with a baby on her hip and happy to wear the modest ankle-length dresses with throat-high necklines.

Historia
At work, we’re taught to lead the conversation. On social media, we shape our personal narratives. At parties, we talk over one another. So do our politicians. We’re not listening. And no one is listening to us. Despite living in a world where technology allows constant digital communication and opportunities to connect, it seems no one is really listening or even knows how. And it’s making us lonelier, more isolated, and less tolerant than ever before. A listener by trade, New York Times contributor Kate Murphy wanted to know how we got here.

Historia
In The Selfishness of Others, the essayist Kristin Dombek provides a clear-sighted account of how a rare clinical diagnosis became a fluid cultural phenomenon, a repository for our deepest fears about love, friendship, and family. She cuts through hysteria in search of the razor-thin line between pathology and common selfishness, writing with robust skepticism toward the prophets of NPD and genuine empathy for those who see themselves as its victims. And finally, she shares her own story in a candid effort to find a path away from the cycle of fear and blame.
