Historia
One of the greatest American achievements in the 20th century was the creation of public schools and universal education, an ideal now deeply at risk. Cornell University professor Noliwe Rooks provides a critical account of the making and unmaking of public education in Cutting School, the first book to foreground how vast racial and economic divides are part and parcel of the push to privatize our education system.

The Kosher Capones tells the fascinating story of Chicago’s Jewish gangsters from Prohibition into the 1980s. Author Joe Kraus traces these gangsters through the lives, criminal careers, and conflicts of Benjamin “Zukie the Bookie” Zuckerman, last of the independent West Side Jewish bosses, and Lenny Patrick, eventual head of the Syndicate’s “Jewish wing.”

“Sam, could you do me a favor?” Thus begins a story that has now become part of America's true-crime hall of fame. It is a gory, grotesque tale befitting a Stephen King novel. It is also a David and Goliath saga - the story of a young lawyer fresh from the public defender's office whose first client in private practice turns out to be the worst serial killer in our nation's history. This is a gripping true crime narrative that reenacts the gruesome killings and the famous trial that shocked a nation.

Well written
Revisado: 08-24-21
The narrator does a terrible Chicago accent. It sounds east coast. 6 million people in the metro area and they can't get a narrator that can do a proper Chicago accent. Or just don't do an accent. He also said "Des Plaines" wrong approximately 200 times. Not a big deal but it was annoying. He did a good job otherwise and I recommend.

One exceptional boy journeys into the ashes of society to find the cure for a devastating plague in this riveting post-apocalyptic stand-alone set in the same world as the USA Today best-selling The Girl With All the Gifts. Once upon a time, in a land blighted by terror, there was a very clever boy. The people thought the boy could save them, so they opened their gates and sent him out into the world. To where the monsters lived.

Waste of time
Revisado: 06-18-21
This book was terrible. I kept listening because I thought something would better tie it to The Girl With All the Gifts or that something interesting would happen. Nope. The only interesting part was the epilogue. The rest had no character development besides one character. I could hardly distinguish between all the other characters but it didn't seem to matter. It sort of goes for a commentary on human society but barely does that. It's like the author got an advance on this book with no plans on what to write and threw together this end product.

Historia
The 1968 US presidential election was the young Lawrence O'Donnell's political awakening, and in the decades since it has remained one of his abiding fascinations. For years he has deployed one of America's shrewdest political minds to understanding its dynamics, not just because it is fascinating in itself but because in it is contained the essence of what makes America different and how we got to where we are now.

I learned a ton
Revisado: 08-30-20
I was a poor student of history. But as we know, proper context isn't taught in schools anyway. So I learned a ton. I suppose there could be some criticisms of the authors biases but my biggest takeaway was that he hated the war and disliked most of the politicians he wrote about except Bobby Kennedy and Gene McCarthy. That isn't going to detract from what I learned and how the information was presented. I see some reviews criticizing reference to Donald Trump but you k kw what? HE'S NOT WRONG and those references were correct so how unfortunate for all of us that this is the case. I thought the author's narration was excellent.

This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Through decades of shared and separate lives, Jude’s suffering - and its impact on those who love him - raises questions about the limits of human endurance, the possibility for redemption, and the meaning of friendship.

frustrating
Revisado: 05-11-20
I thought the first half of this book was wonderful. I have such a hard time finding a good book. This one started so well and went SO downhill during the 2nd half. This is well written but I'm so frustrated with the author. This should have been edited down to be shorter. So much tragedy happens to the main character. I can stomach the tough stuff. I'm fine with it if it adds to the story. Without spoiling, the last two tragedies that happen to the main character I thought were just way too over the top and completely unnecessary. Unfortunately the final tragedy contributes to the ending. It was like the author just feasted on tragedy and piled it on because why not? I found it to be way too excessive. If I could do it over, I would not listen to this book.

She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times...and spying on her neighbors. Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, mother, their teenaged son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn't, her world begins to crumble. And its shocking secrets are laid bare.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Wonderful but too long
Revisado: 12-15-19
I find most popular fiction boring and poorly written. I loved this book. The only negative is the editor did Donna Tartt dirty by not editing out 1hr or more of this book. Not sure how many pages that equates to. It was too long and could have stood to have some entire sections edited out. I still loved it and it stands out as one of my all time favorite fiction listens.

Hendrik Groen may be old, but he is far from dead and isn't planning to be buried any time soon. Granted, his daily strolls are getting shorter because his legs are no longer willing, and he has to visit his doctor more than he'd like. Technically speaking he is...elderly. But surely there is more to life at his age than weak tea and potted geraniums? Hendrik sets out to write an exposé: a year in the life of his care home in Amsterdam, revealing all its ups and downs.

favorite book of the year. I laughed and cried. I laughed while crying. it reminded me of my grandma. the narrator was excellent but his volume changes quite a bit so you need to have the volume up practically all the way. it's true, if you loved A Man Called Ove, you'll love this. I will listen to this again. I rarely do that. I can't say enough good things. I want everyone to read this.

On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.
