The occasional breaks with different narrators seem unnecessary, since this is primary a narrated audiobook versus an audio drama, but the main narrator and story are very good! Kept me engaged and wondering what would happen.

Davina Porter has nuance for every accent, gender, and mood. She remembers every character and brings Diana Gabaldon’s imagination to life. I’m listening to the whole series for the second time (and I NEVER do that)!

This is the best of Grisham’s recent work. The characters were believable and the story had me gripped from the start. I remember how it used to be difficult to put down one of his novels and this one took me back to those days. Great read!

True crime no longer feels like a guilty pleasure

This is not your average who-done-it. When I was 10 years old I would watch Unsolved Mysteries and then watch all of the people I saw walking along the side of the road and make a note of their coat color, or check out the digital clock in my room any time I heard a loud noise in the neighborhood. What if there was a crime in progress and the police needed these details later on? I do like to read or listen to true crime stories, but I tend to favor those where I know they've caught the bad guy in the end. This book is so much more than catching that one bad guy or bringing justice or closure for that one family. Billy Jensen takes the listener through several cases and explains the details behind his crowd-sourcing sleuth work that uses our current social media obsession to catch the bad guys and keep thousands of new cases from turning cold every year!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I followed Rory's blog and the news surrounding his wife's battle with cancer. It was a beautiful story, but everything about the situation seemed surreal. While that writing was inspiring, this book is so much more. This the story of a real man, with real struggles, who found his greatest blessings by putting his trust in God. His blessings are measured in teardrops, not roses but Rory has a peace that can only come from trusting in Him.

What about Rory Feek’s performance did you like?

No other narrator could have told the story with this kind of authenticity.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

While the story is familiar to most of us from media accounts, the book details Smart's ordeal from her personal side of story. Smart is honest and humble and does a good job of helping the listener understand what it was like to live through this as a 14 year old girl.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

While true crime stories typically detail the investigation, there is little of that included in this book. Smart gives insight into her abductors motivations, primarily how he used a religious delusion to justify his pedophilia. Smart was astute enough even as a young girl to recognize his rants for what they were; the product of darkness not the will of God.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

While it seems only right that the author should tell her own story, her narrative is distracting at times.

Would you try another book from Vincent Bugliosi and/or George Newbern?

I have read other Bugliosi titles before and liked them. His book on Manson was very good. Parkland is a well written book and the writing style is easy to follow. My issues with this book are really about the content.

What does George Newbern bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narration is good and doesn't distract from the story.

Was Parkland worth the listening time?

The first part was a pretty good minute by minute account of the day but the second half, detailing the investigation, was very droll and patchy. Bugliosi paints the secret service, the Dallas PD and Sheriffs Department and the FBI as flawless organizations who "did the best they could" and Jack Ruby as a sympathetic character.

Any additional comments?

I've read dozens of books on Kennedy and the assassination, including the entire text of the Warren Commission Report. I've had a curiosity that began in 4th grade over 20 years ago, so when a new book comes out it get's my attention. I'm not a conspiracy theory true believer and I was just as critical of Oliver Stone but this book a) contains nothing new and b) goes so far to present Oswald as the lone assassin that relevant facts that have made people question the Warren Commission for decades are either ignored or presented as fiction. At best Parkland is a one sided version of an event that really needs to be touted as such. At worst it is revisionist history.
