Historia
Texas Ranger Darren Mathews isn’t sure he’s been a good cop, but believes he’s got a shot at being a good man—if he manages to dodge the potential indictment hanging over his head and if he, from here on out, pledges allegiance to the truth. It’s a virtue the country appears to have wholly lost its grip on, but one Darren sees as his salvation. He is in the midst of remaking his life with the woman he loves when he is visited by his mother armed with a tall tale about a missing Black college student, Sera (whose white sorority sisters insist she isn’t missing at all).

Timely Read
Revisado: 09-10-24
Guide Me Home is the third book in the Highway 59 trilogy written by Attica Locke. The trilogy is excellent! Ms Locke is a very talented writer. The characters are very real. The plots are well constructed . The books contain topics of current interest that would make for lively book group discussions. I have read all her books and hope there will be many more to come. I highly recommend her books.

I did enjoy The Beach Hut Murders. However, I liked the first book in the series so much more than this book that I couldn’t justify more than four stars. I will enjoy the next and any additional books and recommend them to you.

Disappointed
Revisado: 07-26-23
I was surprised to realize that I was more offended by the “B” word than the “F” word!
I also was disappointed once again with the us and them attitude that the author put in the main character‘a thoughts. I used to overlook it in his other books and even suspected that it might represent the thinking of a lot of police personnel. But in these times of so much hatred towards intellectuals or towards conservatives, etc., I would hope authors would set an example of kindness and/or tolerance. The police, indeed, all of us would be safer and happier if we could accept different perspectives.

Revisado: 04-15-23
When Harry Met Minnie is a great book! I highly recommend it. I read an audiobook in which Martha Teichner, the author, narrated the book. Her voice was perfect. Again, I highly recommend this memoir.
If you aren’t sure about the “melancholy” portions of the book, I want to reassure you that you will laugh and smile ten times more than you will be sad. The tears that came to my eyes were few. The rewards of learning about the friendships in this book far outweigh the consideration of death.

Historia
The passionate and tragic story of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff is one of the high points of 19th-century Romantic literature. In the relationship of Cathy and Heathcliff, and in the wild, bleak Yorkshire Moors of its setting, Wuthering Heights creates a world of its own, conceived with a disregard for convention and an instinct for poetry and the darkest depths of the human soul in torment.

This classic novel, Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë is very well narrated. Although, to my mind it will always seem a gloomy read, I couldn’t help but be impressed.

Excellent Read
Revisado: 02-09-23
This book’s biographies of Mary & Mary seem very well researched and very interesting. The only caveat I will share here is that the alternate chapters about mother and daughter were sometimes confusing to me as an audiobook reader. If I were to read this again, I might choose the written version so I could differentiate whose writings, children, and challenges were whose! I found that if I didn’t catch the new chapter’s details I could easily get confused. Nevertheless, I enjoyed Romantic Outlaws and recommend it to those who care about European history and/or literature and about the struggles of women in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Her name is Alicia. She was 13 when she began saving the lives of people she did not know - while fleeing the Nazis through war-ravaged Poland. Her family cruelly wrenched from her, Alicia rescued other Jews from the Gestapo, led them to safe hideouts, and lent them her courage and hope. Even the sight of her mother’s brutal murder could not quash this remarkable child’s faith in human goodness - or her determination to prevail against overwhelming odds. After the war, Alicia continued to risk her life, leading Polish Jews on an underground route to freedom in Palestine.

A Brave, Intelligent, Compassionate Teen
Revisado: 01-22-23
Alicia: My Story is a very worthwhile read. From earlier reading I thought I knew an awful lot about what happened in Europe during WWII. I almost didn’t purchase the audiobook. I am so glad I did! Even though, Alicia’s account breaks my heart, it also fills me with amazement and pride that she was able to survive so magnificently. This isn’t an account about the Nazi prison camps, It is about what it was like for Jewish people before, during, and after the Nazis. I learned quite a bit.

It’s Riot!
Revisado: 12-09-22
J D Kirk has done it again…providing me with hours of laughter. However I must admit that not everyone will find it funny. I confess that I have a questionable sense of humor to find the antics of Bob Hoon hysterically funny. I do! If cursing and inane observations appall you, then you might want to give HD Kirk’s books a skip. Otherwise, I highly recommend both the DCI Logan Crime Thrillers series and the Bob Hoon series.
