Historia
Anne Gallagher grew up enchanted by her grandfather’s stories of Ireland. Heartbroken at his death, she travels to his childhood home to spread his ashes. There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time. The Ireland of 1921, teetering on the edge of war, is a dangerous place in which to awaken. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar.

OK if you are into romantic historical fiction...
Revisado: 03-29-25
I guess I did not realize this was a romance novel. Really felt the history was used as a romantic backdrop more than an actual setting and felt the troubles were somehow trivialized by the romance novel. Also had a hard time with some of the temporal anomalies (the journals, for example) but, gee whiz, its a romance novel so I suppose I was confused. Not my (cross)genre(s)?

Reality of the west

Hard to match Cormac McCarthy for pithy reality of the wild west. Existentialism without the fancy philosophy - and cowboys!

Historia
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Good review of current sleep research
Revisado: 03-29-25
This was a helpful book. As is often the case, it could have been shorter but, then, it would not have been able to be sold as a "book" but would have made a GREAT long pod cast or article if boiled down pithily into a few hours.

Interesting but I am not sold on his predictions
Revisado: 03-29-25
Interesting read but I am left with feeling "I hope he is right but I don't think so." I read this early in 2024 and, since then, elections have happened and it is March 2025. I am doubling down on that same feeling.

Historia
In the collection's marvelous title story, two aging vampires in a sun-drenched Italian lemon grove find their hundred-year marriage tested when one of them develops a fear of flying. In "The Seagull Army Descends on Strong Beach, 1979", a dejected teenager discovers that the universe is communicating with him through talismanic objects left in a seagull's nest. "Proving Up" and "The Graveless Doll of Eric Mutis" find Russell veering into more sinister territory.

Interesting range of odd tales
Revisado: 03-29-25
This was a fun read and well written. Some were a bit frivolous (tailgaiting in the polar vortex?) and some were disturbing and I am not sure any of them really went anywhere deep or far, but a fun read.

Historia
Wallace Stegner's uniquely American classic centers on Lyman Ward, a noted historian who relates a fictionalized biography of his pioneer grandparents at a time when he has become estranged from his own family. Through a combination of research, memory, and exaggeration, Ward voices ideas concerning the relationship between history and the present, art and life, parents and children, and husbands and wives.

Time, people, history and relationships

This is one of my all time favorite books. Well told story of complex characters, greatly flawed but noble, talented and committed, facing the primitive western frontier and their own stubborn desires and needs. No heros, no villans - but great characters.

Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

February 1862. The Civil War is less than one year old. The fighting has begun in earnest, and the nation has begun to realize it is in for a long, bloody struggle. Meanwhile, President Lincoln’s beloved eleven-year-old son, Willie, lies upstairs in the White House, gravely ill. In a matter of days, despite predictions of a recovery, Willie dies and is laid to rest in a Georgetown cemetery. “My poor boy, he was too good for this earth,” the president says at the time. “God has called him home.”

This was one of the most enjoyable books I've read in years. Whimsical while thought provoking, spiritually uplifting yet humble, full to overflowing with love, duty and moral courage - with cartoon-like characters keeping it all moving along in hilarity. Dante's Inferno for the modern Buddhist

A Renaissance of American writing could be dawning
Revisado: 06-03-24
This was a deftly written, hauntingly American but blazingly beautiful novel and I look forward to reading more from this author. The plot weaves strands of family, love and honor into the dark, ugly spaces of our country and it's checkered history in a manner that educates as it entertains, challenges as much as it comforts, providing caring refuge as it reflects light and love into some dark places in our collective pasts.

Historia
After the 2008 financial crisis, investment banks and other professional investors had the edge when it came to bailouts and stock trading. The crisis also ushered in a wave of new small-scale retail investors who were hell-bent on crushing the big guys by using social media channels to connect, share ideas, promote stocks, and reap the rewards—Robin Hood-style. But did the meme short squeeze stand a chance in a rigged playing field? This concise, definitive account of a daring Wall Street heist exposes a fight to the death against a fraudulent system.

Incomplete and not objective
Revisado: 04-10-24
This is an odd "performance" and I cannot recommend it. I suppose the most salutory thing I can think to say is that if you are believe short selling is an evil plot by "wall street" to steal money from "average investors" then this is a tolerably well produced audiobook that will support your bias. If you believe "meme stocks" are nutty phenomenon driven by crazy people who should not be allowed to trade, you too can find support for your bias here, as you will be listening through different ears. The truth is, as usual, much more complicated. If you don't really understand short-selling don't expect to be objectively educated here. If an audiobook is neither enlightening or entertaining, why bother? From the very few reviews, it appears few did. Good choice.
