Historia
Long before Tameka Foster Raymond was known for her high-profile marriage and drama-fueled divorce, she lived a vibrant life as a self-made success in the fashion world, curating the wardrobes and images of many of today’s award-winning entertainers. In this honest, sincere, witty, and at times gut-wrenching memoir, Tameka opens up about her childhood influences, coming of age in Oakland, and losing her first love without losing her decorum, dignity, or her ability to dream.

So Happy This Book Was Written
Revisado: 06-23-24
Perspective is important. Living in Atlanta, it was unavoidable to see much of what was written in this book playing out publicly. I remember thinking, “sheesh, she just can’t catch a break!” Without knowing anything about Tameka personally, I DID know, that would be a lot for anyone. This book was wonderfully written. Thank you Tameka for choosing to share your story with us!

Historia
In 1958 Georgia, the shade of a 13-year-old black girl's skin can make the difference in her fate. Tangy Mae is the smartest of her mother's 10 children, but she is also the darkest complected. The Quinns - all different skin shades, all with unknown fathers - live with their charismatic, beautiful, and tyrannical mother, Rozelle, in poverty on the fringes of a Georgia town where Jim Crow rules. Rozelle's children live in fear of her mood swings and her violence, but they are devoted to her. Rozelle pulls her children out of school when they are 12 years old so that they can help support her by going to work.

A Literary Masterpiece
Revisado: 01-29-24
The events in this book are inconceivable yet, in even the most horrific acts penned, there’s someone’s truth. I avoided reading/listening to this book for a good while because the summary and reviews scared me. I didn’t feel like being depressed. I’m grateful that I finally decided to give it a listen. It’s heavy for sure but it’s also nothing short of a literary masterpiece.

Historia
Filled with sharply drawn, emotionally powerful senses, Walk Through Fire traces the hardships Sheila faced in her marriage and her professional life. Despite her skills as a violinist and music teacher, as well as her obvious entrepreneurial talent, she had to fight to overcome self-doubt and fears of failure. Sheila vividly details her struggles, including battling institutional racism, losing a child, suffering emotional abuse in her thirty-three-year marriage, and plunging into a deep depression with her divorce. And yet, out of that pain came renewed purpose and meaning.

Speechless!
Revisado: 11-22-23
And now that I’ve gathered myself, this book is so many things. Validating and Inspiring are the two words that immediately come to mind for me though. What a story! What a journey!

Glad I Decided to Read/Listen
Revisado: 12-21-22
I was almost turned off by the bad reviews of this book. I’m so glad I decided not to allow them to persuade me not to read/listen to this book. I really enjoyed it and learned a few things!

This is INCREDIBLE!
Revisado: 08-21-21
I’m only 30 min in but I’m completely captivated. I believe in large part due to the fact that I’m also from Philly so, there are many parallels in our narratives. I would love to see this taken to a longer form.
