Meet the detective, his temp secretary and his messy life. Murder written with humor, London geography and the ‘whodunit’.
Enjoyable throughout.

Do not attempt to read this one while on your lunch break. I had to fast forward through some of the murder scene details. Cormoran Strike tracks another murder from the opening pages. In this novel you will meet the entire British publishing world of every literati stripe. Brush up on your Latin. Intense.

First: the narrator. He is perfect for this type of documentary style book. Listening to this book is very much like watching any good documentary.
An epic look at Colorado’s history around the South Platte river: the land formation, flora, fauna, dinosaurs, native animal species, including primordial human habitation through eras up to USA’s bicentennial celebration in 1976 . I love documentaries and this book did not disappoint. It took me quite a while to listen to 50+ hours.

I tried and tried to keep plugging to finish this book. I got to chapter 57. (out of 108 chapters). In every chapter there is a cold undercurrent of fear, oppression, punishment, and very little light.
Acid melting faces, torture, full term fetus murdered, extraction of reproductive organ without anesthesia, murder by knife, rape, starvation, young girls blinded by bombing during wartime, and yet this is not nearly a full list of activities dark decade upon dark decade depicted in these pages. There is nothing hopeful, nothing inspiring.
It is probably an accurate description from the era of the Russian Empire through Detente. The last Russian based novel I read- A Gentleman in Moscow -is a detailed, vivid description of life in Russia during oppressive, chaotic years, yet weaves an immersive tapestry in the very best style of story telling. The Eighth Life did not do that.
For me, I couldn’t go on and read any further.
Good narration

I read a lot of historical novels. I looked forward to this book because I haven’t read too much about this era in history or about the Mongolian Empire. The story was good, a lot of intrigue in the “court” of Manduul, the aging Khan without an heir. The descriptions of the houses and lifestyle are complete and give the story a good foundation. Unfortunately the narrator is SO bad I almost gave up listening. The nasal aspect his voice and horrible character voices almost ruin the story. There are great narrators (The Outlander series and A Gentleman in Moscow are captivating!) who truly enhance the stories— this is not one of the good ones.

If you like politics, you will enjoy this behind the scenes life story of a political operative. Interesting way to experience contemporary campaigns from the campaign staff POV. The narrator is wonderful, her tone and style fits perfectly with the written story.

So wanted to enjoy a good spy, thriller, suspense novel. Had to stop after three chapters. It was far too graphic in torture descriptions. Made me nauseous.
