Historia
Messy code is a nuisance. "Tidying" code, to make it more readable, requires breaking it up into manageable sections. In this practical guide, author Kent Beck, creator of Extreme Programming and pioneer of software patterns, suggests when and where you might apply tidyings to improve your code while keeping the overall structure of the system in mind. Instead of trying to master tidying all at once, this book lets you try out a few examples that make sense for your problem. If you have a big function containing many lines of code, you'll learn how to logically divide it into smaller chunks.

Great bookbut wished Kent read it
Revisado: 04-24-25
I needed this book.
I've been thinking about coupling for a long time (shorter than Kent by far). But a lonesome voice calling out isn't worth ad much as a lonesome voice calling out and referring to book written by Kent Beck.
I just wished Kent read them himself. The reader is great! But Kent's tonality is a bit more striking. Aggressive, but warm.

Historia
From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.

I loved this book!
Sarah's experience is extreme, but relatable. As someone who's been in the Stockholm startup scene, I've seen similar things on a smaller scale.
Maybe breaking laws and regulations is part of the definition of startups. Maybe we get careless people at the top by design.
I'm motivated to go a step further in what tools I use in my life.
Thank you for a great book!

Revisado: 06-02-18
I expected to learn about value stream mapping. this was just about selling six sigma, not teaching a methodology. I stopped half-way and skimmed through the rest in hope for content.

I really enjoyed the early chapter on batch sizes, but the rest didn't contribute much with actual advice that gets me closer to doing microservices.

Revisado: 04-23-18
The book was great! Good narrator, and important issues. I miss the international perspective though, and important questions about the validity of capitalism was quickly breezed through. I was expecting a bit more on 0% growth, environment, politics, and ethics.

Historia
"It doesn't take an Einstein to understand modern physics," says Professor Wolfson at the outset of these 24 lectures on what may be the most important subjects in the universe: relativity and quantum physics. Both have reputations for complexity. But the basic ideas behind them are, in fact, simple and comprehensible by anyone. These dynamic and illuminating lectures begin with a brief overview of theories of physical reality starting with Aristotle and culminating in Newtonian or "classical" physics.

on the positive side, it was informative and full of scientific findings.

Historia
The Middle East is a critically important area of our world. And, with its current prominence in international affairs, media images of the Middle East reach us on a daily basis. Much media coverage, however, is incomplete at best, failing to take account of either the complexities or the historical background of this pivotal region. For most of us, the real story of the Middle East remains untold. What made this crucial geopolitical area what it is today?

A story of wars and kings, but not the people
Revisado: 05-07-16
Would you try another book from The Great Courses and/or Professor Eamonn Gearon?
I think the author felt informed, so I could give another book a chance, but I do not agree on where the focus should be. For me, wars and kings are mostly products of its age and people. Muhammed felt like an exception, and there was a couple of more after that. But I would not stand a book with this kind of obsession of war.
What do you think your next listen will be?
My next listen after this was about particle physics.
Have you listened to any of Professor Eamonn Gearon’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, I have not.
What character would you cut from Turning Points in Middle Eastern History?
N/A.
Any additional comments?
I wanted to learn much more of the inventions, philosophers, turning points of everyday life. This kind of book is what made me not like history in school. The intro was tantalizing! The rest of the book had really good spots. But overall, I didn't learn that much.

Historia
We have all pondered seemingly unanswerably but significant questions about our existence - the biggest of all being, "Why are we here?" Philosophy has developed over millennia to help us grapple with these essential intangibles. There is no better way to study the big questions in philosophy than to compare how the world's greatest minds have analyzed these questions, defined the terms, and then reasoned out potential solutions. Once you've compared the arguments, the final step is always deciding for yourself whether you find an explanation convincing.

This is a perfect book for understanding philosophy as a beginner.
it gets too heavy into the questions about god. but I guess its an american thing.
still, the book is light, comical, serious, and leaves me with more questions than before.
just terrific!
