Historia
Who hasn’t wondered for a split second what the world would be like if a person who is the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you’ve probably never heard of The McMasters Conservatory, dedicated to the consummate execution of the homicidal arts. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for erasing someone who deeply deserves a fate no worse (nor better) than death. The campus of this “Poison Ivy League” college—its location unknown to even those who study there—is where you might find yourself the practice target of a classmate.

Historia
It had been raining for weeks. Maybe months. He had forgotten the last day that it hadn't rained, when the storms gave way to the pale blue of the Gulf sky, when the birds flew and the clouds were white and sunshine glistened across the drenched land. Following years of catastrophic hurricanes, the Gulf Coast - stretching from the Florida panhandle to the western Louisiana border - has been brought to its knees. The region is so punished and depleted that the government has drawn a new boundary ninety miles north of the coastline.

Author should write not read

The narration killed this for me. Author read aloud like a nervous gradeschooler. Very stiff.

Historia
In many ways, we’re more comfortable than ever before. But could our sheltered, temperature-controlled, overfed, underchallenged lives actually be the leading cause of many our most urgent physical and mental health issues? In this gripping investigation, award-winning journalist Michael Easter seeks out off-the-grid visionaries, disruptive genius researchers, and mind-body conditioning trailblazers who are unlocking the life-enhancing secrets of a counterintuitive solution: discomfort.

Good messages, not the best “book”
Revisado: 03-29-22
Author clearly did a lot of research. Tried to make the science approachable for general public, which (as a scientist) I greatly appreciate. It’s not easy. Probably could have done the readership a service by asking some of the scientists to offer some constructive critique bc some of it is lacking or over-stated and fails at the fundamental scientific task of exploring alternative explanations for observations. But in fairness it is not science, it’s a self-help book. On that score I look forward to perusing the sources and have already taken some lessons to heart. Thanks for writing this Michael.
BTW, it is pronounced “ET cetera”, not “EK cetera”. If as a listener you know this will grate, be warned.

Narrator needs to get some lessons
Revisado: 03-11-21
Narration was packed with mis-pronunciations. I listened along with my HS kid to help explain some of the older English phrases and found that I had to provide corrections for the narrator! Not professional. It’s slightly better than a monotonic reading, but the language, already difficult for those not already familiar, was made worse with errors and no provision for the rhythm of the prose. It was clear the narrator didn’t understand some sections and was simply reading words.

Loved the narration
Revisado: 11-03-16
What made the experience of listening to The Lacuna the most enjoyable?
I am listening to this book now and logged in to Audible to find out who the narrator was because I have enjoyed the accents and dialects so much. I was amazed to see 1) it's Kingsolver herself and 2) so many reviewers panning the narration! I love accents, and I think she does a really remarkable job with her American protagonist emigre to Mexico, her Russian and Mexican characters, the incredibly flamboyant Frieda, and the American accents from different decades, regions and walks of life. I've so enjoyed the narration that I think reading the book rather than listening to it would be pale in comparison. The story was a little slow to gather momentum in the beginning but I appreciate the time she spent building the foundation for this character. I'm savoring this audiobook.
Which scene was your favorite?
I love it when Soli lapses into a poetic description. He is a writer at heart and it bubbles out of him.
