Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

A technical manual for space engineer survival
Revisado: 09-20-13
I don't know if it got more exciting later, but I couldn't stand listening to the details of him figuring out how to invent things for his survival (marooned on mars), how he would put things together, a list of items he would need and how he would find them, his trial and error, the engineering principals he used. Eergh! I tried to persevere hoping it would get better, I even tried skipping ahead to when the earth station realised he was still alive and marooned but it was too little too late.

Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Far fetched, Horror, Narrator stilted, Silly
Revisado: 06-09-13
I was drawn to this book because it mentioned Tesler, but the reference is fleeting.
It was way too far-fetched for me, the secret and the monsters were ridiculous. I like fantasy/sci fi but for me their needs to be some believability.
I read the reviews which were glowing, which for me don't match the story or the narrator.
It may be enjoyable to people who follow the Fantasy/horror genre, fans of H. P. Lovecraft but for me it was no where near as good as the reviewers say.
I couldn't finish it, and I have hardly ever not finished a book. I really tried, I got 1/2 way through the second half but it was too annoying.
The narrator was very stilted, so much so it was very distracting,
His accents were good, which made it easy to identify different characters, but the timing of his delivery was very annoying. He would read really slow in the first half of a sentence.
With commas in all the wrong places, e.g. What he saw was real, madness...
instead of What he saw was real madness...
He speaks really slowly then fast, I think he is reading the second half of the sentence while speaking the first, then he speaks the second half really fast to catch up
So you are left waiting, then hurried along trying to catch up.
and I didn't like the references to Scoobydoo throughout the book
too bad if you are not a fan
It just made it more silly
Also it seems the author tried a bit too hard to impress us with his knowledge of computers and modern communication. We wasted lots of time on detailed descriptions of these which just seemed like fillers

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Couldn't put it down, unbelievably believable
Revisado: 05-15-13
This was fascinating to me on various levels, you got to learn about
- Golem's and Genies
- explore how they felt suddenly turning up in 19th C New York.
- what 19th C New York was like with all the new immigrants
- myths and legends in Jewish Kaballa culture (golems) and Bedouin culture, (genies)
It was really well written, well read, absorbing, believable and a good pace
We got to explore each character and how they felt about what was happening now and how they got to this stage in their lives.
Lots of mystery and intrigue -- refreshingly unpredictable

fascinating
Revisado: 01-23-13
This looked like a fascinating book but when I started listening I thought I had the wrong book as it starts with of philosophies of the various religions of the world. So I put it away until I saw Life of Pi at the movies. I found the movie fascinating and couldn't wait to listen to the book.
Now the introduction makes sense, and it is a fascinating story, well told though I can't tell what my impression would have been if I hadn't seen the movie.

The Lucy Family Alphabet

Historia
Judith Lucy has been cracking jokes about her parents for years. But when a birth relative's casual comment implied that she despised them, Judith was shocked. Sure, she had been talking about Ann and Tony Lucy like they were one-dimensional Irish nutbags who'd ruined her life for years, but there was always more to them and her own feelings than that.So Judith decided it was time to write the full story of her parents and her childhood.

I really enjoyed it
Revisado: 01-07-13
Would you listen to The Lucy Family Alphabet again? Why?
I enjoyed this immensely, I already liked Judith Lucy's style of comedy. There were many points of laughterHer parents reminded me of mine and I am adopted and can identify with her issues, so that may influence my appreciation for her dry humour.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Lucy Family Alphabet?
Many of the anecdotes were funny and sad all at the same time, quite moving - poignant.
Have you listened to any of Judith Lucy’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have listened to Judith's stand up comedy. I already enjoyed her dry wit. Her delivery definitely adds to the book. I don't think it would be as good to read it as a printed book, unless you know Judith's style really well and can imagine her reading it.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I did listen to it for hours at a time because I enjoyed it, though it is broken up into so many short parts, and the stories are from various points in time, so it could be easily be listened to in short bursts
Any additional comments?
This book is like a big stand up show rather than a novel. There is a couple of stories per letter of the alphabet

Could have been better
Revisado: 11-27-12
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I have just listened to ALL of the Phryne Fisher mysteries and absolutely loved them, so they were a hard act to follow
I did get frustrated with the amount of detail given of preparing and consuming food. It seemed to be over the top, much more than was necessary to set the scene and distracts from the understanding of the story.
Would you be willing to try another book from Kerry Greenwood? Why or why not?
Not up to Phryne Fisher standard. I loved the Phryne Fisher books. I just listened to 18 of them while commuting to work. I wanted more Phryne Fisher and the Corinna Chapman series was a disappointment
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Again it is hard to go past the narrator of the Phryne books, Stephanie Daniels is perfect.
I understand that this needs to be different as it is a very different character but the voice acting is not up to parr either.
This narrator has a good voice for the main character but most of her other character voices are annoying. As first person Corrina she sound strong and capable with a fairly deep female voice so when she does the male voice she can't go lower so she makes it breathy, so they sound like stoners. And I am annoyed enough by vapid female voices but these ones even have lisps, which is too much.
Was Devil's Food worth the listening time?
I still enjoyed the book, it was still an interesting story and it was a hard act to follow
