Historia
After pacifying the old Earth underground military base and defeating the Sleem, Tyson Dawes and Silken Sands are flush with new items and morties. But the Dearth Conglomerate has been circling over them in Arizona, and they want his land. Which wouldn't be such a problem if the boss weren't such an incompetent and spoiled child.

Fantastic
Revisado: 02-26-25
A vibrant, original story with amazing world and character building.
It's Dungeon Crawler Carl.. including some species.. but at the same time totally different and unique.
All amazingly performed by who I can only assume is Mitch Hedburg's brother or college roommate. Maybe Mitch Hedburg reincarnated with a starfish in his chest.

Historia
We've come a long way in the forty years since the Shongairi attacked Earth, killed half its people, and then were driven away by an alliance of humans with the other sentient bipeds who inhabit our planet. We took the technology they left behind, and rapidly built ourselves into a starfaring civilization. Because we haven't got a moment to lose. Because it's clear that there are even more powerful, more hostile aliens out there, and Earth needs allies. But it also transpires that the Shongairi expedition that nearly destroyed our home planet ... wasn't an official one.

1/3 of a book, compared to the first 2 installments
Revisado: 02-03-24
Like others have said, it seems like a transition book switching over to a long series instead of a trilogy/miniseries? I don't know. it's good, just short and mostly filler and lead in.

Historia
Brian Polk had been stateside for barely a year after leaving the Air Force when the unthinkable happened. It was an interstellar invasion. The Earupitans' technology and weaponry was so remarkable, humanity never really had a chance. The aliens now walk brazenly among humans - their reptilian eyes always watchful, always scrutinizing. Humanity now lives in fear - freedom is a thing of the past. And then there are those who have befriended the enemy. But not Captain Brian Polk. When he acquires some of the alien technology, he finally has hope of making some small difference.

Done with McGinnis
Revisado: 11-18-23
I've read a few of his books now, and all of them seem to have some common issues. They tend to be simplistic, with minimal character and world building. They tend to have underlying notes of casual, but not outright, misogyny and racism. They (at least the ones I've read) all follow a white guy on a damsel rescuing, shoot em up, "adventure".
if you want/like Michael Bay action stories from a Reagan years worldview, this author/book is for you.

Historia
During the day, he’s a South Chicago high school janitor, slopping a mop around from nine o’clock to three o’clock, five days a week. At night, hiding out in a boarded-up factory, he attends to his damaged interstellar spacecraft, making repairs and counting the days until he can return to his homeworld of Calunoth. All he needs to do is mind his own business and avoid any messy human dramas for just a few more weeks. But it is on one of those quiet nights when he hears them outside: the MP140s. Named for a police radio code for murder, they're among the most ruthless killers.

Nothing Special
Revisado: 11-16-23
The main plot arc isn't anything all that original or intriguing. As other reviews have noted, the first half of the book gets pretty bleak. I assumed this to be somewhat of a build up/set up for some bleak/exceptional actions/decisions in response by the MC, but no, it's just there.
The interpersonal relationships are both stunted and immature. What exploration there is of the underlying politics, tech, or histories of the universe are bland surface skims.
It's not a bad story, persay, I personally just don't care about any of the characters, the universe, or really anything regarding the story after 10hrs. It's meh.

Simplistic
Revisado: 11-15-23
Pretty much everything about this story, and it's narration for that matter, is simplistic. Juvenile. It's fast food- edible, but nothing memorable or really noteworthy, and a few of the fries are soggy or burnt.
Race and misogyny, given their prevalence of any time travel story with a group of people going back to the founding years of the colonies, are touched on, but nonetheless minimized bordering towards apologetic. "We bought a plantation that came with slaves. That's horrible! Welp, can't do much about it given the times, we'll feed and house them better, call them 'workers' instead of slaves, and free them on the DL in a decade or so while reminding them they don't really have anywhere else to go." "Women here don't do amything but manage the house, worry, and serve as damsels? Welp, good thing the only ones that survived past the first 50 pages fit that bill! It would have been a shame if the nurse or historian had made it.. their knowledge and capabilities would have raised many a eyebrow and added complexity to the rest of the tale!"
The entire book/series was just.. a simplistic story of a middle aged white dude building a micro empire in the past. It had plausible enough details and historical accuracy, a comfortable (read: predictable) plot and subplots, and a happy enough ending. On the whole, decent enough, but it won't get any replays from me. Check out Ring of Fire or Destiny's Crucible for better execution (IMO) of more or less the same premise.

Historia
Reidon Ward's first semester at the Galens Institute hasn't been without reward. In just over half a year he's gone from the weakest cadet at school to one of the strongest in his class, and there's no one left who would argue that his Device, Shido, isn't the most terrifying CAD they've ever laid eyes on. Still, Rei knows that his climb has barely begun, like he knows that the true fight is only just starting. After all… The Sectionals tournament has arrived. Rei, along with Aria, Viv, Catcher, and a couple unexpected squadmates, are about to face the first real battle of their careers.

Historia
Reidon Ward will become a god. He doesn't know it yet, of course. Reidon was born weak, sickly, and small. Afflicted with a painful disease and abandoned by his parents because of it, he has had to fight tooth and nail for every minor advantage life has allowed him. However, his perseverance has not gone unnoticed, and when the most powerful artificial intelligence in human history takes an interest in him, things began to change quickly.

not really my thing, even.
Revisado: 11-06-23
I'm much more hard-scifi/hard-scifi-lite, typically. I don't watch anime, I don't play Warhammer or similar video/tabletop games, and I literally fell asleep in all three LoTR movies I was dragged to.
That being stated- I didn't even really notice how the story was effectively centered around giant sword and hammer equipped Gundams. It's just a fantastic story set in a logical, believable, and (always most importantly) so far consistent new series universe.

Historia
In 1984, a doomsday vault was constructed on a remote island in the Arctic Ocean. Its purpose was to preserve Earth's genetic history in the event of a global catastrophe. Now, decades later, a second vault has been uncovered, this one resting where no one ever expected. And the problem is it's not ours. Yet even more curious than the vault itself is what lies inside. Seeds. Millions of seeds. Each with a genetic embryo untouched and perfectly preserved. Waiting.

YA, maybe?
Revisado: 10-16-23
A continuance of the second book's trends, with the addition of a "revelation" every other paragraph that causes everyone's "jaws to drop wide open".
Most of the plots and subplots are blindingly obvious and predictable to anyone who has completed a HS education, which only makes the fact that trained Navy Seals and changing-the-world grade scientists so baffled by, and then shocked (see above) by, them all the more indigestible. It also doesn't help that several developments and plot points are direct results of trained Navy Seals and/or CIA agents going waaaay out of their way to only knock someone out, or shoot them in the hand, or whatever only to have the bad guy show up again 10 pages later. And then again. Pretty much the entire book is "quick, I knocked him out, let's run away! He'll tell his goons which way we went as soon as he wakes up! We gotta get a head start!" "Oh, no! He told his goons how we escaped and told them where we were!" *her jaw dropped- they were caught*.
So, yeah, maybe this is YA without a tag. I honestly don't know. As far as an adult book/series, though, it is simplistic at best and rife with illogicalities, inconsistencies, and some out and out wtf's.

Naivety creep
Revisado: 10-12-23
The first book was good, with only a few technical/consistency issues that I noticed, but nothing really glaring. This book is similar, but with the addition of some rather glaring issues in regards to how things work in the real world, things that elude, but should be obvious to the genius scientists, and a few overlooked *glaring* potholes. In several spots- particularly towards the end and the wrap up- it felt like a teen fiction book or a PG-13 movie. Like, I don't know, watered down or almost immature in the actions, revelations, and emotions.
I'll read the third one and see if some of the issues are/were plot set ups, but if the naivety creep continues, I'll definitely be done.
