Historia
For half a century, we have been trained to believe that our right brain hemisphere is our emotional brain, while our left brain houses our rational thinking. Now neuroscience shows that it's not that simple: In fact, our emotional limbic tissue is evenly divided between our two hemispheres. Consequently, each hemisphere has both an emotional brain and a thinking brain. In this groundbreaking new book, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor presents these four distinct modules of cells as four characters that make up who we are.

Perception Broadening, Thought Provoking, and Life Changing
Revisado: 01-30-25
This may be the most important book I’ve ever read (listened to). It has helped me understand myself by understanding where my thoughts and feelings come from, how they interact with each other, and how I in turn interact with other people (who are guided by their own thoughts and feelings). It has given me tools to unify my different “selves,” and take control of/structure my life by listening to what they all have to say, and acting accordingly.

Historia
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

Great performance, interesting tidbits throughout, whalishly long, perhaps intentionally (as the author even suggests toward the end)

Came for Peter Pan, but I got… this
Revisado: 05-25-23
I have seen a couple of Peter Pan movies, and I wanted to finally read the actual story. I got this, thinking it was the actual story, but it turns out it wasn’t. I still listened to it, and was fairly unimpressed. Many times, the audio would fade or get muffled. The story itself just wasn’t very good in my estimation, which may be due to what other reviewers described as it being “an amalgamation of different stories/productions *about* Peter Pan, but not the actual book.” at this point, I don’t really want to read the real book anymore, either. Bad form, Audible.

Jeff Ryan shares the story of how this quintessentially Japanese company found success in the American market.

Revisado: 05-25-23
I learned a lot about Nintendo, the video game explosion of the 1980s, the shift from arcade to console, and the subsequent arms race between brands that continues to this day. I was inspired by the creator’s resourcefulness in using the limited tools he had available to invent fantastic and well-aging games.

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Great story, great use of language, excellent narration.
Revisado: 05-19-23
I never read this before, and while it is probably targeted at women, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Jane Austin had a masterful command of the English language and conveying the subtleties of romance. My only complaint was that there weren’t any explosions. Not one.

I enjoyed hearing about the process, and it was a great expansion of ideas from the first book. The only problem hung I didn’t particularly enjoy was walking through numerous drafts of very similar work after revisions, but I think they served a good purpose.

Great storytelling is making listeners care about your characters, the choices they make, and what happens to them. It's making your audience feel the tension and emotion of a situation right alongside your protagonist. And to tell a damn fine story, you need to understand why and how that caring happens. Using a mix of personal stories, pop fiction examples, and traditional storytelling terms, New York Times best-selling author Chuck Wendig will help you internalize the feel of powerful storytelling.

“Kill Your Darlings: Rules for Thee, Not for Me”
Revisado: 05-08-23
The performance is good. There are some helpful chapters of info in this book, and I enjoyed it fairly well, despite it being tedious at times. My number one criticism: For a book that mentions “Kill your darlings” on several occasions, this book is chock full of darlings. The author includes dozens of tangential little asides intended to be amusing, which often fall short and almost always detract from the message of the writing.

Historia
Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

Fantastic book about accessing creativity!
Revisado: 03-11-23
I love hearing Rick speak. I’ve been aware of him as the producer of some monster albums, but I had never looked into him. I heard him as a guest on The Huberman Lab Podcast and I had to check out this book. I loved it in its entirety. It was so inspiring and reassuring. It reminded me that I *am* an artist (which I knew), and that everyone has the capacity to be an artist. It also showed how easy it is to access creativity when you are open to it. It reinforced an idea that I somewhat recently came to understand - that as a creative individual, I *have* to create things, or I am in violation of my nature. I have already been more driven to produce and share art. I will listen to this book multiple times, and likely buy a physical copy so I can underline and write in the margins. Everyone even remotely interested in creative work should read (or listen to) this. 11/10
