Kept me entertained but not outstanding
Revisado: 02-22-25
This book was engaging & good escapism. It was exciting in parts. The storyline is a bit unbelievable though, and without giving spoilers, my comment is that psychopaths are solitary animals. The male narrator was great. I'm not a fan of Imogen. Her voices feel a bit artificial and don't seem to be carried throughout the story.

Historia
After more than a decade, when sisters Nikki, Sami, and Tori Knotek hear the word mom, it claws like an eagle’s talons, triggering memories that have been their secret since childhood. Until now. For years, behind the closed doors of their farmhouse in Raymond, Washington, their sadistic mother, Shelly, subjected her girls to unimaginable abuse, degradation, torture, and psychic terrors. Through it all, Nikki, Sami, and Tori developed a defiant bond that made them far less vulnerable than Shelly imagined.

Way too drawn out, to much repetitive abuse
Revisado: 01-15-25
This story has a lot of potential. Unfortunately it started well then went downhill. It is an important true story to share and the abuse is horrendous. However, every aspect of all of it was just described in too much detail and it was too drawn out. The voices started getting to me too - Shelley & Tori's characters in particular. I gave up & googled the story instead.

Urgh. Very disappointing
Revisado: 10-21-24
This had potential. The story itself is decent, although I only got half way. I couldn't handle the kid aspect. I found it very jarring to be in the middle of a police discussion & then to have one of his kids yell out. It's unprofessional & unrealistic. I found that aspect too irritating to continue. Yes, you have kids - we get it. Now move along

Awful Narrator, Difficult Characters to Follow
Revisado: 09-19-24
Overall the story was OK. Initially I was enjoying it, but I found it got more soapy as the story unfolded
There are many characters, but they were underdeveloped which lead me to become confused with who was who.
The narrator is terrible. His usual voice isn't bad, but his female voice is cringe worthy. His performance of some characters made me uncomfortable - with lots of shouting. He should have stuck with being Balki bartokomous

Revisado: 01-10-24
I love the writing of JD Kirk. Angus King as narrator is always excellent. Not as gripping as the DI Logan set, but maybe that's just my bias. I'm team Logan after all

Follows the Formula; but great escapism
Revisado: 03-21-23
A bit tired of the corruption & similar story lines, but still love the Katie Maguire series. Some phrases are repeated in the books which can make them a bit formulaic & predictable. It delivered the usual dose of suspense, gore, romance, angst & sex

Historia
One cold spring morning in County Cork, two fishermen find a bundle of rags floating in the Blackwater River. It is the bloated body of Father Heaney. His hands and feet are bound, and his neck bears the marks of garrotting wire. Worse still, he has been castrated. When a second priest is found murdered, his body bruised and beaten and the same savage wound hidden beneath his soutane, Detective Inspector Katie Maguire finds evidence of a sinister cover-up at St Joseph's Orphanage.

Good, but not as good as Book 1
Revisado: 01-06-23
Gripping, exciting story, but not as "unputdownable" as book 1. A bit odd as a character who died in book 1 was mentioned in book 2?? Be warned - torture scenes are graphic, and the sex scenes leave nothing to the imagination

Historia
On an isolated farm in southern Ireland, a decades-old grave houses the dismembered bones of 11 women. Detective Superintendent Katie Maguire of the Irish Gardai is used to bloodshed, but these white bones speak of unimaginable butchery. Not far away, a young American tourist is at the mercy of a sadistic killer. His tools are a boning knife, twine, and a doll fashioned from rags, nails, and fish-hooks. The murder of his victims is secondary only to his pleasure at their pain.
