Historia
Before journalist Chelsea Conaboy gave birth, she anticipated the joy of holding her newborn, the endless dirty diapers, and the sleepless nights. What she didn’t expect was how different she would feel—a shift in self, as deep as it was disorienting. Something was changing: her brain. New parents undergo major brain changes, driven by hormones and the deluge of stimuli a baby provides. Conaboy delves into the neuroscience to reveal unexpected upsides, generations of scientific neglect, and a powerful new narrative of parenthood.

Wish I’d read this before
Revisado: 11-09-23
I gave birth to my daughter in September 2021, this book came out around a year later. It’s prescience and maturity and empathy and deep, deep knowing, would have been exactly what I needed in my early post partum days. It is smart and kind, a combination of science and humanity. I have recommended this book to every new mother in my life and many other parents, too. I am thankful for this book.

Essential reading for parents and humans of all shapes and sizes
Revisado: 10-01-22
If you are a human being who eats food and/or are raising a human being who eats food, you need to read this book. If you’ve ever wondered why your relationship with food and your body feels messy, confusing, or concerning, you need to read this book. If you are looking for well-researched and human-centered talking points about diet culture and food in our society and personal lives, you need to read this book. Virginia Sole Smith is an author and podcaster that I have come to really respect and admire in the last couple of years, and I am so glad I finally read this book.

Dangerous rules for men prone to anger
Revisado: 12-31-21
This book peddles harmful beliefs, ideas that promote anger in men, violence towards women, and entitlement for those in the class of white male ideologues in America and the Western world. I am not in favor of banning books, but I wish Jordan Peterson would evolve as a person and use his platform and following for good, instead of perpetuating old stereotypes and outdated ideals of a (far less equitable) world gone by.

Every person (not just cis women) should read this
Revisado: 09-01-21
So much I didn’t understand about how human sexuality works, and she is able to explain it in a consumable, approachable, fun way. An expert at allegory, she ties both her metaphors and stories of real people throughout the book in a way that carries us along comfortably familiar as we (the reader) keep building on concepts and learning new things. Really loved this book, and continue to recommend it to people.

Historia
The world is working exactly as designed. And it’s not working very well. Which means, we need to do a better job of designing it. Design is a craft with an amazing amount of power. The power to choose. The power to influence. As designers, we need to see ourselves as gatekeepers of what we are bringing into the world and what we choose not to bring into the world.

Revisado: 03-22-21
Mike Monteiro did an incredible job making the case for how designers have contributed to our downfall and how we (yes still us designers) must pick up and work together to fix it. Big props for his constant awareness throughout the book of his privilege, our collective privilege, and all that we are fighting for. Well done. And big props for thanking Gritty at the end.

Incredible story, wonderful writer
Revisado: 03-20-21
I have loved Ms Girma’s story since I heard her speak last year. Reading this memoir has solidified that admiration and taught me so much about ableism and disability rights in America and throughout the world. She’s also an incredible writer and narrator, with an exceptional knack for description and emotion. The book is a joy to read on Audible.

Dr. Jamison is one of the foremost authorities on manic-depressive (bipolar) illness; she has also experienced it firsthand. For even while she was pursuing her career in academic medicine, Jamison found herself succumbing to the same exhilarating highs and catastrophic depressions that afflicted many of her patients, as her disorder launched her into ruinous spending sprees, episodes of violence, and an attempted suicide.

Historia
What is autism: a lifelong disability or a naturally occurring form of cognitive difference akin to certain forms of genius? In truth, it is both of these things and more - and the future of our society depends on our understanding it. Wired reporter Steve Silberman unearths the secret history of autism, long suppressed by the same clinicians who became famous for discovering it, and finds surprising answers to the crucial question of why the number of diagnoses has soared in recent years.

Comprehensive view of autism through the ages
Revisado: 03-15-21
I’d recommend this book to anyone looking to understand neurodiversity and its many facets. Definitely parents, friends, loved ones of those with an autism diagnosis, and maybe those researching the traits, looking at themselves. Beyond the basics of autism, this book takes you on a journey of the perception of, and experience of, autistic people in the last ~100 years. I learned so much, and liked how thorough and well researched the book was.
