Historia
A brilliant and utterly original thinker, Andrew Solomon's journey began from his experience of being the gay child of straight parents. He wondered how other families accommodate children who have a variety of differences: families of people who are deaf, who are dwarfs, who have Down syndrome, who have autism, who have schizophrenia, who have multiple severe disabilities, who are prodigies, who commit crimes, who are transgender.

Gave me additional perspectives on life and humanity
Revisado: 07-15-24
Narration is great. I was worried that 40
hours would kill me. But the book is split up into about 10 chapters, each of which is about 4 hours and is on a separate topic. So to me it feels more like a long form podcast with ten episodes.
The content of the book was great. I’ve never experienced any of the issues/identities the author describes but I think hearing the stories has given me more empathy for people and families who have. And will make me a better person. Can you give better praise for a book than that it has made you a slightly better person and given you additional perspectives on life and humanity?

Historia
A born teacher and lecturer, Professor Timothy B. Shutt examines the history and culture of ancient Sparta, a society renowned for military excellence and adherence to the values of courage, discipline, duty, and the overcoming of fear. Vastly outnumbered at the Battle of Thermopylae, the Spartan "300" held off an overwhelming Persian force before finally succumbing - but not without inflicting massive casualties and inspiring the rest of the Greeks with the notion that they could persevere.

Lip-smacking delight!
Revisado: 11-25-23
I wanted to continue listening but there was so much lip-smacking and breathing I just couldn’t do it. That’s just the way this guy talks but I couldn’t take it. It’s the producers fault for not taking it out.

Goldilocks of Greek History
Revisado: 11-01-23
For me, a person interested in history and in the Greeks but not knowing much about them, this was the perfect length and depth. Never getting too deep. But going deep enough to keep it interesting.

Historia
Mrs. Sookie Poole of Point Clear, Alabama, has just married off the last of her daughters and is looking forward to relaxing and perhaps traveling with her husband, Earle. The only thing left to contend with is her mother, the formidable Lenore Simmons Krackenberry. Lenore may be a lot of fun for other people, but is, for the most part, an overbearing presence for her daughter. Then one day, quite by accident, Sookie discovers a secret about her mother's past that knocks her for a loop and suddenly calls into question everything she ever thought she knew about herself, her family, and her future.

Held my attention. Not as funny to me as to others.
Revisado: 04-29-23
This book held my attention and was a fine book. It wasn’t as funny to me as other people made it sound in reviews. I think I would have rather listened to something else instead. I liked learning about the wasps. Great that the author shines a light on a forgotten set of brave women in a remarkable time.

Historia
In his subtle and engaging investigation into the life and times of Jesus, Thomas Cahill shows us Jesus from his birth to his execution through the eyes of those who knew him and in the context of his time—a time when the Jews were struggling to maintain their beliefs under overlords who imposed their worldview on their subjects. Here is Jesus the loving friend, itinerate preacher, and quiet revolutionary, whose words and actions inspired his followers to journey throughout the Roman world and speak the truth he instilled.

Not so much history
Revisado: 04-29-23
I thought it was going to be more of history but it was more theological and exploration of the gospels. As that I thought it was fine. But I thought from the title and description that I was getting a history. This is one persons view of the gospel with his interpretations of how it should be thought and lived. As that, it is fine. I just hoped for different.

Historia
The vivid, fast-paced account of the siege of Khe Sanh told through the eyes of the men who lived it. For seventy-seven days in 1968, amid fears that America faced its own disastrous Dien Bien Phu, six thousand US Marines held off thirty thousand North Vietnamese Army regulars at the remote mountain stronghold called Khe Sanh. It was the biggest battle of the Vietnam War, with sharp ground engagements, devastating artillery duels, and massive US air strikes.

Just randomness
Revisado: 12-22-21
The book seemed like randomness. There was a lot of narrative about what happened but there was at no time a unifying story. It was just introduction to one person after another and one situation after another. At a few points he goes a little deeper but then just moves on. I listened to the end to see if he would sum it up or something. Nope. It just … ends.

Historia
Millions of words have poured forth about man's trip to the moon, but until now few people have had a sense of the most engrossing side of the adventure: namely, what went on in the minds of the astronauts themselves - in space, on the moon, and even during certain odysseys on earth. It is this, the inner life of the astronauts, that Tom Wolfe describes with his almost uncanny empathetic powers that made The Right Stuff a classic.

Great story
Revisado: 07-21-19
I like histories that weave a story and aren’t just a linear set of facts. This was a great story. The narration is superb.
