Historia
The Barnes family is in trouble. Dickie’s once-lucrative car business is going under—but Dickie is spending his days in the woods, building an apocalypse-proof bunker with a renegade handyman. His wife, Imelda, is selling off her jewelry on eBay and half-heartedly dodging the attention of fast-talking cattle farmer Big Mike, while their teenage daughter, Cass, formerly top of her class, seems determined to binge drink her way through her final exams. As for twelve-year-old PJ, he’s on the brink of running away.

Historia
As he searches for a mysteriously vanished girlfriend, Haruki Murakami's protagonist plunges into a wind tunnel of sexual violence and metaphysical dread in which he collides with call girls, plays chaperone to a lovely teenaged psychic, and receives cryptic instructions from a shabby but oracular Sheep Man. Dance Dance Dance is a tense, poignant, and often hilarious ride through the cultural Cuisinart that is contemporary Japan, a place where everything that is not up for sale is up for grabs.

So much to dream your way through. Thirty something heroes and confusion finding their way. Dream and reality dancing through the zeitgeist with plenty of physicality and spiritual desire.

Historia
What is the role of the writer? Prophet? High priest of art? Court jester? Or witness to the real world? Looking back on her own childhood and writing career, Margaret Atwood examines the metaphors which writers of fiction and poetry have used to explain - or excuse! - their activities, looking at what costumes they have assumed, what roles they have chosen to play. In her final chapter she takes up the challenge of the title: if a writer is to be seen as "gifted", who is doing the giving and what are the terms of the gift?

A writer who honestly likes writing
Revisado: 11-03-22
Unlike some listeners who say they would have preferred to read this book, I was very happy to listen. I like her no-fanfare voice and Canadian accent as well as her marvelous sense of humour and irony which is accentuated through her voice. The content is a major review of literature ancient and modern and much of it that I had not read, I now will read. I am thankful she was not brought up on TV.

Historia
Corbin College, not quite upstate New York, winter 1959-1960: Ruben Blum, a Jewish historian—but not an historian of the Jews—is co-opted onto a hiring committee to review the application of an exiled Israeli scholar specializing in the Spanish Inquisition. When Benzion Netanyahu shows up for an interview, family unexpectedly in tow, Blum plays the reluctant host to guests who proceed to lay waste to his American complacencies. Mixing fiction with nonfiction, the campus novel with the lecture, The Netanyahus is a wildly inventive comedy of blending, identity, and politics.

Now I know!
Revisado: 10-19-22
I was in Israel in a kibbutz when I met Rabin. I later heard of his assassination owing to his wanting to return land to the Palestinians. I did not know about the roots of Netanyahu who has with American help refused to let that happen. I loved this book (despite the mistakes of the reader) for its weaving of family dramas and medieval and modern history in maddening and delicious detail. The notes from the author are invaluable in appreciating the relevance of the domestic tale.

Historia
As a panicked world goes into lockdown, Lucy Barton is uprooted from her life in Manhattan and bundled away to a small town in Maine by her ex-husband and on-again, off-again friend, William. For the next several months, it’s just Lucy, William, and their complex past together in a little house nestled against the moody, swirling sea. Rich with empathy and emotion, Lucy by the Sea vividly captures the fear and struggles that come with isolation, as well as the hope, peace, and possibilities that those long, quiet days can inspire.

Towles has not disappointed me yet.
Revisado: 08-26-22
Long may he write the emotionally intelligent historically referenced stories he has so far spun. This New York book is full of geographical as well as historical references. Also it is a candid look at the aristocratic indifference and excesses of inherited wealth in an era of vast economic differences. it is a scathing reminder of easy come easy go of fortunes in this era. The classes that assume superior cultural pedigree are revealed to juman in the same way as their inferiors. The story is told in the eloquent voice of an independent young woman on her way to getting tas much justice and freedom out of the game. Yet she doesn't succumb to the rich who would own her, but charts her own course in disarming ways that are a wonder to behold. For one who loves the idea and reality of New York, it gives pages and pages that open for us to explore around each corner of the city. We are taken to the places the rich escape to, from the views from high over Central Park to the mansions in the Hamptons, and also the dives and tenements in less trendy New York. I found the story and the picture of tcity's cultural colors o be nostalgia heaven, and that's before I never wanted it to end.
