Surprising ending
Revisado: 01-15-25
This is a nicely woven story of dragons, elves, dwarves, and magic- though none of it is quite in the way you expect. Drew me right in and held my attention through all 3 books.
Great read

Wonderful, unique world with powerful women characters
Revisado: 12-29-24
I thoroughly enjoyed diving into this world full of prioresses, magic, and theater. It’s a cool idea that a well told story can change the world.

Historia
Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

Historia
Seventh-grader Zoey has her hands full as she takes care of her much younger siblings after school every day while her mom works her shift at the pizza parlor. Not that her mom seems to appreciate it. At least there's Lenny, her mom's boyfriend - they all get to live in his nice, clean trailer. At school, Zoey tries to stay under the radar. Her only friend, Fuchsia, has her own issues, and since they're in an entirely different world than the rich kids, it's best if no one notices them. Zoey thinks how much easier everything would be if she were an octopus.

Tough topics handled brilliantly
Revisado: 08-16-24
This book has a lovely, sweet voice of a girl who comes to see the hard place her mom and siblings are in more clearly. She uses skills from school to help her mom escape from a bad situation and create a new beginning for her whole family.
I also loved that this author showed topics from multiple points of view and didn’t vilify people for what they believed or enjoyed. Definitely an exercise in empathy and understanding.
Very well done.

Captivatingly real
Revisado: 07-07-24
Though I knew this was a work of fiction from the disclaimer at the very beginning, It felt so real and true that I kept forgetting that this wasn’t the well-told true story of a woman with an extraordinary life.
I restarted the novel again as soon as I finished because I didn’t want to leave the world inside the book. It reminds me of Eat, Pray, love— but with more intrigue.

Historia
Beauty’s life is the stuff of fairy tales. The youngest in her family, Beauty isn’t trying to catch Stephan’s eye. He is the lord baron’s heir, well above her family’s modest station, but when he kisses her hand at a party, Beauty is swept away by his charm, his wit, and his passionate declarations of love. Hearts can be untamable creatures, especially when touched by the fires of first love, and Beauty doesn’t see the truth of Stephan’s intentions until it is too late. Until he stops asking for Beauty’s love—and simply takes it from her one night despite her refusal.

This is an extraordinary retelling of beauty and the beast where beauty has lived through some serious and hard times, and beast isn’t all he seems to be either.
I appreciated the tastefulness and gentleness the author used to describe Beauty’s difficulties in dealing with an attacker earlier.
It was an entertaining and thoughtful listen.

Historia
Eleven-year-old Juniper Berry lives in a cabin with her family deep in the wild woods. Living off the grid is usually exciting, like the time she chased off three growling raccoons with a tree branch and some acorns, or when she thought she glimpsed the legendary Bigfoot. But her happy life in the wild ends abruptly when her younger brother gets sick, and the family moves to the city to be closer to the hospital. Juniper and her older sister are sent to live with cousins they hardly know and attend a public school for the first time, which is harder to navigate than the wild woods ever were.

Fascinating, thoughtful perspective.
Revisado: 03-25-24
Juniper Berry’s family has always lived in the “wild” out where civilization can’t reach them, and it works great for them… until her brother gets sick. Suddenly a juniper is faced with crazy, civilized things like roaring monsters (cars), and washer-boxes (washing machines), and harder still— family that she never knew she had. It’s hard to fit in when you don’t know or understand the rules. From the outside looking in, some of things are pretty confusing, while others are refreshingly clear.
Juniper Berry’s resilience and courage carry her through this journey from one world to the next.
Excellent read for anyone who loves middlegrade books.

Historia
When he was very young, Berg’s mother hid him in a cave and led an angry mob of villagers away, sacrificing her own life to protect her son. In all the years since, Berg has lived alone; the only reminders of his family are his mother’s satchel and his recurring dreams of a white bear who shares a magical sand from a fallen star. When the white bear touches Berg with the star-blue sand, he feels safe and happy in his dreams. Sometimes, when he feels lonely, he will risk entering a village to trade a smooth river rock or a feather for food.

A fable for our times
Revisado: 08-23-22
Dustin Hansen weaves a magical tale of giants and legends which asks the question, how far should one change to be accepted? What if we don’t belong? And, what is the meaning of true friendship. Definitely worth the listen, but if you get a chance to read/see the book in person, the illustrations tell another whole bonus story. Beautiful all the way through.
Also, I loved the deep tones of the narrator’s voice.
