I love the back and forth between the 1600s and the 1800s. I always learn a lot about how people lived then, The story is really touching and reminds us what it was like when people were property.

Historia
Harriet Andover had no intention of dying young like her silly siblings had. She intended to outlive them and outdo them as she always had. But Harriet discovers that the best intentions can lead to murder when she is strangled inside her mansion with a house full of holiday guests. As much as Inspector Witherspoon enjoys his job delivering justice, the last thing he wanted was a complicated murder case just a week before Christmas. He soon discovers that Harriet's own husband and grown stepchildren are not overcome with grief and neither are most of her friends.

The most annoying book . .
Revisado: 12-17-21
It was obvious that the key and the victim’s papers were the “key” to the mystery and the inspector is clueless. The obsequiousness of the housekeeper who does the actual solving of mysteries is really hard to take.

The best car chase
Revisado: 08-23-21
I’m not a fan of car chases for their own sake, but this was so well written, and suspenseful, rather than gratuitously speedy. I listened twice to get all the details.
The characters are complex and delightful. I hope there will be more in this series.

Change. Sometimes it wells up from within and we enter gracefully. At other times, it is utterly choiceless and the past, present, and future get burned up in the most unforgiving flames. The seven skills presented in When Bad Lands help guide us through this challenging and rewarding journey. This is not a shortcut to clean up the surface or soften the edges. Rather, it is a mirror for courageously seeing ourselves with humor and heart.

I needed to hear that it’s not enough to meditate consistently, you have to actually do the work to accept who you are, eventually coming to the hard earned understanding of basic goodness. If you’re ready to look deeper, this is the book for you.

Gentle humor, complete character
Revisado: 02-15-17
This series of books gets better with each new book. The characters are richly drawn -- from cats to people. Her gentle humor makes me chuckle out loud. Unfortunately the ending was another main character in a dangerous situation. I think that's a little overdone. But overall a book I'll listen to again.

Plot problems
Revisado: 01-13-16
The author needs a better editor to catch discrepancies in the plot and to keep from making her intelligent characters stupid just to further the plot. This would have been an interesting story even without the 2nd murder. Kudos to her for an ending without the main character in danger, tho.

Normally the arrival of an art exhibition at the Mayville Heights library would be cause for celebration. But thanks to the overbearing curator and high-tech security system that comes with it, Kathleen's life has been completely disrupted. Even Owen and Hercules have been affected, since their favorite human doesn't seem to have a spare moment to make their favorite fish crackers or listen to Barry Manilow.

The author has found a way to create an interesting story and have the main characters work together instead of against each other. And the ending was dangerous in the tradition of her stories, but not. Well done.

Historia
In the dead of the night, a man is found murdered, locked in the stocks on the village green. Unfortunately for Superintendent Hannasyde, the deceased is Andrew Vereker, a man hated by nearly everyone, especially his odd and unhelpful family members. The Verekers are as eccentric as they are corrupt, and it will take all Hannasyde's skill at detection to determine who's telling the truth, and who is pointing him in the wrong direction. The question is: who in this family is clever enough to get away with murder?

Interesting, but annoying.
Revisado: 05-07-15
Thank goodness for Giles, or this would have been unbearable with all the unpleasant characters that inhabit this book. I'm going to try one more in this series, but if unpleasant people is the main stock for this author, it'll be my last.
