Historia
College student Joe Talbert has the modest goal of completing a writing assignment for an English class. His task is to interview a stranger and write a brief biography of the person. With deadlines looming, Joe heads to a nearby nursing home to find a willing subject. There he meets Carl Iverson, and soon nothing in Joe's life is ever the same. Carl is a dying Vietnam veteran-and a convicted murderer. With only a few months to live, he has been medically paroled to a nursing home after spending thirty years in prison for the crimes of rape and murder.

A twister of a story, well told, a quick fun read
Revisado: 08-07-24
This feels like a true crime show as a story. Good plot, likable real people, a strong female character, I’ll probably try another from this author. Four stars only because fives are reserved for special, important, or classic books.

Historia
Alabama endured warfare, slave trading, squatting, and speculating on its path to becoming America’s 22nd state, and Daniel S. Dupre brings its captivating frontier history to life in Alabama's Frontiers and the Rise of the Old South. Dupre’s vivid narrative begins when Hernando de Soto first led hundreds of armed Europeans into the region during the fall of 1540. Although this early invasion was defeated, Spain, France, and England would each vie for control over the area’s natural resources.

Detailed overview of an overlooked piece of history
Revisado: 05-15-24
This is a well told tale of competing forces that converged on an area already home to an ancient civilization. French, Spanish, and English empires fought with each other and the natives in a complex web of shifting borders and allegiances. Alabama became the king of cotton but before that it as a vast woodland culture focused on corn and game. The intersection is fascinating and worth the time to learn more about. Historia
Trust. Betrayal. Revenge. The Count of Monte Cristo is the quintessential masterpiece of Alexandre Dumas. In Edmond Dantes we find an early materialization of the modern superhero. He is a dashing young sailor imprisoned unjustly for treason. While in prison he meets a holy man who imparts to him all his wisdom. The "abbe" also divulges the profound secret of a hidden treasure. Dantes realizes that with such immense wealth, one could wreak a hateful vengeance on one's enemies.

Epic tale of Revenge, and a Wee Travelog
Revisado: 05-03-24
The Count. What an enigma. Like Miley Cirus, he’s been was six people and that was just his twenties! Thoroughly moral, and really bent at the same time, The Count level set what it meant to be a protagonist. Five stars.

Historia
As the most celebrated European to explore Asia, Marco Polo was the original global traveler and the earliest bridge between East and West. A universal icon of adventure and discovery, he has inspired six centuries of popular fascination and spurious mythology. Now, from acclaimed author Laurence Bergreen, comes the first fully authoritative biography of one of the most enchanting figures in world history.

Excellent tale well told
Revisado: 04-16-24
I learned so much about the Polo's and life at this time. This is an epic tale of Marco and his family and their decades of trade and travel. My family owned men's clothing stores while I was growing up and my Dad referred to himself as a "merchant". To a young mind, the word carried with it romantic notions of The Spice Road and travel and foreign lands. Marco's original story stands alone in history as the most outrageous story that turned out to be mostly true. Highly recommended.

Historia
The Viking Age - from 750 to 1050 saw an unprecedented expansion of the Scandinavian peoples into the wider world. As traders and raiders, explorers and colonists, they ranged from eastern North America to the Asian steppe. But for centuries, the Vikings have been seen through the eyes of others, distorted to suit the tastes of medieval clerics and Elizabethan playwrights, Victorian imperialists, Nazis, and more. None of these appropriations capture the real Vikings, or the richness and sophistication of their culture.

Nice thorough survey of the history of this region and peoples. The sections on current DNA analysis were particularly interesting. I just got to visit Iceland Sweden and Denmark and this helped fill in some gaps. Good reader too.

Historia
Portugal has a rich history that dates to prehistoric times. The first settlers left amazing art behind in the form of rock carvings and rock monoliths. Even though Portugal is probably best known for exploring the world during the Age of Discovery, the history of mainland Portugal is rarely described outside of the country. The purpose of this audiobook is to familiarize English speakers with the events and personas that built the Portuguese kingdom, its overseas empire, and the state that Portugal is today.

Good survey of Portuguese history
Revisado: 06-02-23
This is a good intro to Portuguese history. I shared it with a friend from Lisbon who agreed. It glosses over some things that Portugal people think mean more than the brief moment given in the book but they are very opinionated. That’s not the authors fault!!

Historia
For the past few hundred years, most of what we’ve been taught about the native cultures of North America came from reports authored by the conquerors and colonizers who destroyed them. Now - with the technological advances of modern archaeology and a new perspective on world history - we are finally able to piece together their compelling true stories. In Ancient Civilizations of North America, Professor Edwin Barnhart, Director of the Maya Exploration Center, will open your eyes to a fascinating world you never knew existed - even though you’ve been living right next to it, or even on top of it.

Another good course (& stop saying "Indians")
Revisado: 12-03-22
Another good course from Great Courses. This is a current overview of what's known about the Americas prior to the 15th century. I was taught that things started with Clovis Culture but that now appears to be less than the whole story. New findings like the Spring in Florida, and the Cave in S America and the DNA, has revealed a more complex and complete picture of those migration patterns. Anyway, it's a good way to catch up on the lastest science regarding the population of the Americas.
