Historia
They were the Three Amigos: Duncan Holloway, Imogen Swan, and Corey Szabo. Two young boys with difficult lives at home banding together with a cool girl who didn’t mind mucking through the mud on their hikes. They grew up to be Duncan Holloway, activist, CEO, and face of the popular River Rain outdoor stores, Imogen Swan, award-winning actress and America’s sweetheart, and Corey Szabo, ruthless tech billionaire. Rich and very famous, they would learn the devastating knowledge of how the selfish acts of one would affect all their lives.

Felt less than fully developed.
Revisado: 10-05-20
The story needed more to it. The plot lines weren’t very deep or twisty. It had the beginnings of being as great as most of KA’s stories are, but it just didn’t get all the way there. I feel like I listened to a draft-not a first draft, but a draft nonetheless.
Also, that one male narrator needs a different voice for women; I’ve heard this one before and didn’t love it then either. The main character started off as so elegant with the female narrator, who happens to be one of my favorite, and by the end the male narrator has her sounding as if she were a vapid character, just saying non-vapid things.
This was good for as far as it went, but it left me wanting more, and not in the good way.

Grim-Aced
Revisado: 06-12-20
I honestly don’t think I would have noticed how many, many, many times the author used the word, grimaced, if the narrator hadn’t mispronounced it each and every time.
By the end, not only was it grating on my nerves, I had a distinct vision of the entire cast of characters walking around London looking like they had painful belly gas.
The pronunciation really distracted front the story and the repeated use of the word lowered my opinion of Laurens as an author.

Historia
For decades we have been taught that fat is bad for us, carbohydrates better, and that the key to a healthy weight is eating less and exercising more. Yet despite this advice, we have seen unprecedented epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Taubes argues that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates, like white flour, easily digested starches, and sugars, and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number.

LIFE CHANGING
Revisado: 07-21-16
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Wholeheartedly YES! This book needs to be taught in schools. It is historical, insightful, mind bending, exceptionally researched and written, and it's going to change my life.
It would be beneficial to anyone - lean to obese. Knowledge is power. After reading/listening to this book I feel empowered.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Good Calories, Bad Calories?
Chapter 24. I was listening to this one in bed before going to sleep and the truths it revealed made me so angry that I had to get up. These things should have been taught to us and our parents at every opportunity. If they had, we would always have treated grains, breads and sugars as true treats and giving them up now wouldn't seem so incredibly insurmountable for overweight people.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
The truth behind the political intrigues and egos of the nutritional research community - and why they're killing you.
Any additional comments?
I am a 36 year old, 5'7", 275 pound obese woman, and I've never been able to stick to a diet. 40 of the pounds was put on in the last year. I was an active thin child and teen and I ate whatever I wanted. My mother made balanced, traditional meals. I sold my horse, went to college and started to balloon - freshman 15 every year (and I went through 7 years of college/law school). No matter what I tried, I always went back to bread and sweets, which were invariably mixed with the fat I was trying to avoid. NOW I know why. I truly KNOW - because it's been meticulously explained from historic, scientific, and political vantage points. NOW I stand a chance of beating it.
I have also passed the pre-diabetic threshold, so I have been working with an endocrinologist and she has me on Metformin and Victoza to help with the insulin resistance. The Victoza has really helped my appetite and my cravings are nearly gone. The Victoza in combination with my new knowledge and anger at having this information kept from me my whole life is a trifecta that I am going to use to propel myself into the way of eating we should have had our entire lives. Suddenly it seems like the obvious thing to do, and leaving behind breads and sugars seems like a sweet release, not a nightmarish endeavor doomed to failure. (I'm pretty sure the last is the Victoza speaking - but I'm going with it. Oh, and pun intended.)
For anyone that's going to go carb/sugar free, the book doesn't talk about it, but others do. The source of the meat and fat you're eating matters too. Read up on conventional feed lots, farmed fish, caged chicken conditions, and what those animals are given to eat. You'll soon discover that grain fed beef/lamb, free range, soy free poultry, wild fish, and foraged, soy free pork are the way to really get the most nutrition and best balance of nutrition. It's tricky and overwhelming to try to find these things, but the internet is a wonderful thing and I was able to find a local farm that delivers these things. Poke around your area and you'll probably find something too. OH! and if you ever get a chance to try raw, whole milk from grass fed cows (preferably Jersey cows) - take it. The stuff is delicious and probiotic. It'll take up some of your allotted carbs for the day, but it's so worth it both in taste and nutrition.
