Unique and Satisfying
Revisado: 02-02-25
Great pacing. Terrific narration. The protagonist's perspective is flawed and engaging. The reader can easily buy into such an absurd premise, which is a testament to the author's writing.

Historia
Jennifer Thorne skewers all-too-familiar family dynamics in this sly, wickedly funny vacation-Gothic. Beautifully unhinged and deeply satisfying, Diavola is a sharp twist on the classic haunted house story, exploring loneliness, belonging, and the seemingly inescapable bonds of family mythology.

Refreshing and Gut Wrenching

This title deftly manages to tread well worn paths of horror without fatiguing the reader.

Historia
The Witch is dead. And the discovery of her corpse - by a group of children playing near the irrigation canals - propels the whole village into an investigation of how and why this murder occurred. Rumors and suspicions spread. As the novel unfolds in a dazzling linguistic torrent, with each unreliable narrator lingering on new details, new acts of depravity or brutality, Melchor extracts some tiny shred of humanity from these characters that most would write off as utterly irredeemable, forming a lasting portrait of a damned Mexican village.

Brutal
Revisado: 10-19-23
This is a headphones-only, brutal, and original novel from an author I'll be keeping up with. You've been warned about the content, so please do not rate this novel poorly because of its subject matter.

Historia
These people will give anything for the idols they worship, be they rock stars, actors or authors. Or even serial killers. Lori is just such a fanatic. Her obsession is with Edmund Cox, a man of sadistic cruelty who butchered more than 20 women. She’s gone so far as to forge a relationship with him, visiting him in prison and sending him letters on a regular basis. She will do anything to get close to him, so when he gives her a task, she eagerly accepts it. She has no idea of the horror that awaits her.

The Narration May Pull You Out of the Story
Revisado: 08-21-23
The lack of differing character voices made the listen less engaging than it should have been based on the material.

Historia
Since Anabelle’s mother left for Earth to care for her own ailing mother, her days in New Galveston have been spent at school and her nights at her laconic father’s diner with Watson, the family Kitchen Engine and dishwasher, as her only companion. When the Silence came, and communication and shipments from Earth to its colonies on Mars stopped, life seemed stuck in foreboding stasis until the night Silas Mundt and his gang attacked.

Bizarre that this is not already a best-seller.
Revisado: 08-02-23
Fantastic surreal science fiction that realistically depicts the rationale of a teenager. The world building is mint. The voice performance is stellar. The pacing is next-level.

Predictable
Revisado: 02-19-21
If you're listening to this novel and attempting to follow the story, don't bother. No, the greatest mechanic of the story's plot isn't explained. No, this doesn't make the novel more thought-provoking or interesting. It's a story told through mostly the male gaze in a way that is boring and on top of the poorly laid-out plot, disappointing. If you like Stephen King's abrupt endings and one-dimensional female characters, you'll like this.

Historia
The year is 2033. The world has been reduced to rubble. Humanity is nearly extinct and the half-destroyed cities have become uninhabitable through radiation. Beyond their boundaries, they say, lie endless burned-out deserts and the remains of splintered forests. Survivors still remember the past greatness of humankind, but the last remains of civilisation have already become a distant memory. Man has handed over stewardship of the earth to new life-forms. A few score thousand survivors live on, not knowing whether they are the only ones left on Earth....

The narrator is phenomenal and this book is certainly worth the time. I'll definitely be listening to this again.
