Historia
Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

Historia
Tess Durbeyfield has become one of the most famous female protagonists in 19th-century British literature. Betrayed by the two men in her life - Alec D’Urberville, her seducer/rapist and father of her fated child; and Angel, her intellectual and pious husband - Tess takes justice, and her own destiny, into her delicate hands. In telling her desperate and passionate story, Hardy brings Tess to life with an extraordinary vividness that makes her live in the heart of the reader long after the novel is concluded.

Mess of the D'Urbervilles, A Pastoral Painting
Revisado: 03-29-25
This is the story of a girl with very stupid parents who manage to ruin her life before she even has a chance to make her own bad decisions. Tess is thrown into a world where her only two romantic options are: (1) a predator in period costume and (2) a self-righteous hypocrite who crumbles at the first sign of imperfection. Spoiler: neither works out well for her.
This book is a must-read for anyone fascinated by Victorian Society . This is not however your crinoline and candlelit ballroom story. This is a novel to reveal the harsh reality of a world all wrapped-up in social and gender injustice, moral rigidity and unyielding norms.
Written long before the #MeToo movement, Tess of the D'Urbervilles is undeniably a masterpiece. even if the ending makes you want to throw the book across the room. Hardy’s descriptions are almost painterly— you could step right into the scene. You can vividly picture the rolling fields, the golden light, and the peasants working in harmony (or misery) with nature. Even though the story itself is utterly exasperating , the penmanship is really exceptional .

Historia
Barnaby Gaitlin was never a bad kid, but he was certainly doing his best to impersonate one. As a teenager, he developed a habit of breaking into other people’s houses. But he wasn’t interested in the valuable loot - he just liked to read people’s mail, peruse their family albums, and maybe pocket a few personal mementos. Now almost 30 and divorced, he finds himself working for Rent-aBack, which helps the elderly and infirm move furniture or take down their Christmas trees. It’s the perfect career for Barnaby.

A Good Read, but
Revisado: 02-28-25
First time reader of Anne Tyler. I must say I love the characters, there is something of a Jane Austen in Anne Tyler in the way she looks at her contemporaries and depicts them on paper. Their description is subtle and very relatable at the same time. However , the story is so-so. First there is too much of the same story over and over again ( the main character's past ) . The end is abrupt and ambiguous. It could be ok , why not ? It could be a choice made from the writer. But after 12 hours or so of listening to Barnaby's psyche and doubts, the reader is suddenly abandoned , with no explanation. You kind of find yourself in the position of a shrink listening to his insecure patient. After a while, it's a bit tiresome and because you are no shrink, there is no paycheck .

Creepy and Fun
Revisado: 06-19-24
This is a modern version of Susan Hill's " The Woman In Black" , and I loved it ! The story is seen through different characters and each have their own flaws and secrets, they really come to life through the story and the performance of the readers.
And then, there is the girl , in white.
If you enjoy a good ghost story , but want a change from the same old same narrative , this one's for you ! The dusty cretonne and yellowish papers have been replaced with weed and alcohol and it rocks !

Fascinating, Beautifully written
Revisado: 06-16-24
It took me ages to finish this book because I simply did not want to reach the end. As a French reader, I felt like Joan was holding my hand and taking me for a stroll while telling me her own story . This book is not only fascinating, it is also very beautifully written as some passages are akin to lyrical poems . Now I have finally reached the end, and I'm going to visit Domrémy - la pucelle , Joan's birthplace because I just don't want the stroll to stop yet.

The fight for the throne of the largest kingdom in Western Europe has begun. You need to slow down that recording !
Revisado: 11-28-22
Do yourself a favour and slow the recording at 0,8 speed as suggested by other reviewers. Because obviously , the performers had some train or plane to catch and they couldn't read the book fast enough so it seems ! Does it ruin the story? You bet it does because you can barely understand what's going on ! Once you do slow it down, you realise it's actually a great book that plunges you into the minds of people during the Black Death . It's really worth it.

That was my favorite reading of the whole trilogy, maybe because as the reader you become accustomed to all the characters. Also I found it was Ben Miles' best performance as narrator. Quite a feat actually !
