Historia
Over the fifty years that Lorne Michaels has been at the helm of Saturday Night Live, he has become a revered and inimitable presence in the entertainment world. He’s a tastemaker, a mogul, a withholding father figure, a genius spotter of talent, a shrewd businessman, a name-dropper, a raconteur, the inspiration for Dr. Evil, the winner of more than a hundred Emmys—and, essentially, a mystery. Generations of writers and performers have spent their lives trying to figure him out, by turns demonizing and lionizing him.

Alive and Well
Revisado: 03-25-25
I love the story. Much has been well documented elsewhere. But the more personal material was very worth the read.
I thought the reader was AI many times. I can’t believe the number of simple words and familiar names she mispronounced, to say nothing of the popular catchphrases that she was clearly unfamiliar with. It didn’t ruin the experience, but was annoying.

Historia
Think of an important moment in live TV over the last half-century. Dick Ebersol was likely involved. Dropping out of college to join the crew of ABC’s Wide World of Sports, Ebersol worked the Mexico City Olympics during the famous protest by John Carlos and Tommie Smith as well as the Munich Olympics during the tragic hostage standoff. He went on to cocreate Saturday Night Live with Lorne Michaels and later produced the show for four seasons, helping launch Eddie Murphy to stardom.

Historia
Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

This book would have benefited from examples. And Rick Rubin would have had some great ones. It reads too much like a textbook.

Historia
1916: Norma Wallace, age 15, arrived in New Orleans. Sexy and shrewd, she quickly went from streetwalker to madam and by 1920 had opened what became a legendary house of prostitution. There she entertained a steady stream of governors, gangsters, and movie stars until she was arrested at last in 1962. Shortly before she died in 1974, she tape-recorded her memories. With those tapes and original research, Christine Wiltz chronicles Norma's rise and fall with the social history of New Orleans.

Fun Read
Revisado: 02-03-23
The book was interesting, and a good read. It did feel like something was missing, although I can’t put my finger on it. Some of the reader’s choices were a bit odd like a Popeye cartoon: girl=goyle?!

Forest Gump of New Orleans
Revisado: 01-25-23
This is a great book from the point of view of a guy who had a very unique view of everything major that happened in New Orleans in the second half of the 20th century.
The only odd thing is that the narrator, who is clearly good with voices, did not use a Cajun accent. But that did not detract from the book at all.

Decades before The Daily Show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour proved there was a place on television for no-holds-barred political comedy with a decidedly antiauthoritarian point of view. In this explosive, revealing history of the show, veteran entertainment journalist David Bianculli tells the fascinating story of its three-year network run---and the cultural impact that's still being felt today.

First, the performance was fantastic. The Smothers Brothers provided the shoulders upon which all other “comedy with a message” performers have stood ever since—from SNL through Colbert and so many in between. This is a must read for all my fellow comedy history nerds.

We get it—he owns a really nice thesaurus. It was interesting for a bit, but ultimately it was hollow—much like the lifestyle itself. It could have been a lot shorter, but I’m still glad I listened to it.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
It gets a little tedious at times, like when he lists historic events. But many readers will appreciate this.

Historia
When Norm Macdonald, one of the greatest stand-up comics of all time, was approached to write a celebrity memoir, he flatly refused, calling the genre “one step below instruction manuals.” Norm then promptly took a two-year hiatus from stand-up comedy to live on a farm in northern Canada. When he emerged he had under his arm a manuscript, a genre-smashing book about comedy, tragedy, love, loss, war, and redemption. When asked if this was the celebrity memoir, Norm replied, “Call it anything you damn like.”

Mindblowing. No, seriously. Mindblowing.
Revisado: 10-22-16
If you could sum up Based on a True Story in three words, what would they be?
Norm Times Ten
Who was your favorite character and why?
Um.... Norm.
What does Norm Macdonald and Tim O'Halloran bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Only Norm can do Norm justice. But this went beyond. I would listen to any book narrated by him. I didn't think I would come to that conclusion before listening to this. But he seriously nailed it. T.O. did a great job, too.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I honestly did not think I would have such strong emotional reactions. I won't say more because I think it best for each listener to experience it with as fresh a mind as possible.
Any additional comments?
Wow.
