Even by the standards of the 1970s, even compared to Jar-Jar Binks, the legendary 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special is a peerlessly cringeworthy pop-culture artifact.

Fascinating and hilarious!
Revisado: 12-18-24
This is a great companion piece to the documentary of the same name. It not only covers the making of the Star Wars Holiday Special, but also the entire history of the weird transition Lucasfilm was going through between Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back, as well as the late 70s entertainment landscape more generally. On top of that, it's often laugh out loud funny!

Historia
In his Poetics, Aristotle puts forward that everything we create is a kind of imitation of life, merely using different types of media, objects and manners, whether painting, music, or language. We shape the images, sounds or words to make some particular point and tell a unique story. But if you want an audience to respond to what you have to say, whatever you create must be connected logically to the real world. The rules of doing this successfully are laid out in Poetics.

A great performance of a valuable book
Revisado: 10-19-23
It's amazing how many of these writing tips are still widely used today. Aristotle gives pointers on how to streamline your story, write vivid characters, plan great plot twists, and aim your whole script at creating an emotional effect in your audience.
The narrator is perfect, capturing my mental image of Aristotle as a gruff, wise, and sometimes sarcastic professor.

Historia
Big Wednesday, based on the cult 1978 film by the same name, follows three California beach buddies begin to realize there is more to life than waxing down their surfboards as they ditch their alcoholic and unruly ways to go fight in the Vietnam War. When they reunite 10 years later, they find that things in Malibu are much different after fighting a war.

A great novel in its own right
Revisado: 07-10-23
There was a basic novelization of Big Wednesday in the 70s, but this 2020 edition is a revision and expansion by co-screenwriter Dennis Aaberg, with input from John Milius. So it's essentially a new book, and a fresh take on the classic movie.
The book expands on many scenes from the movie, as well as adding whole new ones. It helps flesh out the characters, and even has fascinating facts about the history of surfing in Malibu, that make it all seem like a mythical fairy land of heroes and outlaws.
All the things that made the movie great still shine through, and, for my money, are improved in this new version. The prose is beautiful, and you can tell a lot of care and craft went into writing this love letter to the film, to surfing, and to the fans.
Highly recommend!

The early life of Kurosawa
Revisado: 06-26-23
This book covers the life of Akira Kurosawa from his birth to the release of his film Rashomon, which launched him to international fame.
Only the last third or so actually deals with his experiences as a director, and it only covers the first 11 of his 30 films, excluding many of his most famous films, like Seven Samurai and Yojimbo. Of course, I would have preferred a book that offered his insights into these works. And the movies he did discuss usually only get a brief chapter each, with only one or two anecdotes or discussions of his thought process when making the film.
BUT his musings on his childhood in pre-WW2 Japan are beautiful and moving in their own right. They read like a great novel, full of mood and psychological insight. Kurosawa is very frank with his audience, and isn't afraid to talk about his own weaknesses and embarrassments.
Fans of his films may be disappointed in the lack of deep discussion of his films. But if you think of this as a book about the filmmaker, and only secondarily about the films, you will really enjoy this book.
The narration is excellent, and really captures the essence of Kurosawa's personality.

Historia
The tale of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and the fall and redemption of Anakin Skywalker has become modern myth, an epic tragedy of the corruption of a young man in love into darkness, the rise of evil, and the power of good triumphing in the end. But it didn't start out that way. In this thorough account of one of cinema's most lasting works, Michael Kaminski presents the true history of how Star Wars was written, from its beginnings as a science fiction fairy tale to its development over three decades into the epic we now know, chronicling the methods, techniques, thought processes, and struggles of its creator.

The book is very scholarly and well-sourced. The narrator was perfect, and even did some pretty amusing (and convincing) impressions of Lucas and many of the other players involved when quoting them!

Exceptional life, exceptionally told
Revisado: 03-12-22
McAfee was deeply flawed but endlessly fascinating. You really do get the feeling that the "master of disinformation" was finally letting his guard down and telling the real story...or as close to it as he was willing to get.
Even if it's all fake, he was a hell of a storyteller, and I alternated between fits of laughter, jaw-dropped awe, and outright disgust as he told about his wild and crazy life.
Highly recommended.

Over 40 years ago, Games People Play revolutionized our understanding of what really goes on during our most basic social interactions. More than five million copies later, Dr. Eric Berne's classic is as astonishing and revealing as it was on the day it was first published. We play games all the time---sexual games, marital games, power games with our bosses, and competitive games with our friends.

I learned a lot about human behavior, much of it I can immediately apply in my dealings with people.
The format isn't the best for an audio book (making use of lots of bullet points and abbreviations) but for people like me who prefer audio books to physical, it's still well worth the time!

I really enjoyed this audiobook...especially at such a competitive price!
The narrator's accent is pleasing (though, technically, the narrator would likely be American) and he has a good command of Lovecraft's formal style.

Revisado: 04-02-19
Interesting topic, engaging author, perfect narrator! Leading anarchist Emma Goldman advocates for syndicalism, a worker's movement based on direct action rather than political strategies. At the very least, it's a fascinating snapshot of a radical perspective on an interesting historical period.

Historia
When the British fought the young United States during the War of 1812, they knew that taking the mouth of the Mississippi River was the key to crippling their former colony. Capturing the city of New Orleans and stopping trade up the river sounded like a simple task - New Orleans was far away from Washington, out of sight and out of mind for the politicians. What the British didn't count on was the power of General Andrew Jackson.
