Historia
We all have things in our life that we should know by now, but don’t. Absences in our knowledge and skillset that are frankly shameful in an adult. Things that would be too embarrassing to ask anyone to explain – except our very best friend. Listen in as Mel and Sue tackle their ignorance head on, asking each other to explain something that they still don’t know - but absolutely, as adults, should - from how to parallel park to fully understanding bread (why has it got all those holes in it? What, honestly, is yeast?).

“The Golden Vassal. “
Revisado: 05-02-25
I like the part about Mel naming her husband The Silver Prince. I am now referring to mine as The Golden Vassal because he treats me like the Queen I have always been. You may get up off of your knees now.

Historia
The irascible A. J. Fikry, owner of Island Books - the only bookstore on Alice Island - has already lost his wife. Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go. One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children’s section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

I rank his understandings of men and women, young and old alongside Shakespeare.

I liked everything. I will reread this again and use is as a springboard to educating myself about medicine in the middle of the 20th century, both Eastern and Western.

Unforgettable story and reading
Revisado: 09-13-24
Verghese’s descriptions of operations and organs of the body might perhaps be overly medical for some but it was not the case for me. The narrator’s voice completely mitigated the “medicalese” with perfectly pitched plausibility of the author’s intent. This was a story about surgeons and the surgeries they performed but it was filled to the brim with relatable human experiences and vulnerabilities for everyone. I LOVED EVERY MINUTE!

Black History should be taught in schools
Revisado: 10-15-23
Read this book in my early 20’s and loved it for the sweep and saga of the Civil War times brought to life by Mitchell. Now, in my 60’s, SO MUCH MORE AWARE! As a former schoolteacher, I would love to discuss this book with BLACK LIVES MATTER folks and anti-racism folks. It was despicable the way Mitchell portrayed the enslaved people and the Klu Klux Klan and personally, as a loving mother, Scarlet’s indifference, bordering on hatred, of her own children… I am at a loss for words.

Historia
In lively, absorbing prose that rivals the finest literary fiction, prize-winning historian Carolly Erickson recreates the life of the notorious Tudor king, Henry VIII. In his youth as a charming national hero, his reign as a monstrous king, and his final days as a tottering old man, Erickson draws a thoroughly convincing portrait of one of English history’s most notorious characters.
