Historia
Top neurosurgeon Samantha Thomson needs to get married fast and is tightlipped as to why. And with over $200,000 on offer to tie the knot, no questions asked, cash-strapped ER nurse Hayden Perez isn't about to demand answers. The deal is only for a year of marriage, but Hayden's going into it knowing it will be a nightmare. Sam is complicated, rude, kind of cold, and someone Hayden barely tolerates at work, let alone wants to marry. The hardest part is that Hayden has to convince everyone around them that they're madly in love and that racing down the aisle is all they've ever wanted.

Historia
Maleneth's return to the City of Echoes is not a happy one – Nightcliff has collapsed into violent, decadent debauchery. Khaine himself is usurped, and her precious coven lies in tatters. Accompanied by an ogor mercenary and a Kharadron anarchist, Maleneth sets out to avenge her sisters, but soon finds herself embroiled in a conspiracy, the ramifications of which threaten not just the city, but the Realm of Shadow itself. To stop it, she must ascend to the blood-soaked summit of Nightcliff’s Bladed Spire, and face an enemy of sky-cracking power before time itself slips out of reach.

Gayer Than I Anticipated
Revisado: 04-14-25
This is my first Warhammer book. It was very good, making me fall in love with the world and the many colorful characters within it. What totally surprised me was the blatant homoerotic subtext between Maleneth and Xarissa. Even the narrator seems to play them up, leaning into meaningful pauses and heavy laden words. I never expected Games Workshop to allow queer themes, so it was a very pleasant surprise for my first Warhammer foray. Very delightful book. May become a new comfort listen for me.

This Needs a Sequel
Revisado: 10-17-24
This is the most enemies-to-lovers I've ever seen. Or maybe enemies as lovers. I think this is a very well researched, well performed, well loved story with crests and valleys and parts that took my breath away. The greatest critique I can give is that it truly feels incomplete. But it doesn't necessarily need a sequel, either. It could have just been an hour longer, or maybe there can be a followup novella that wraps up the romance. It feels like pages are missing, like I was driving down a road and suddenly ran out of gas. This is really a very beautiful story, but the lack of closure has left me bereft in a way books often don't. Maybe that was the author's intent. Doesn't mean I have to agree with the decision. I need to go read a dozen enemies to lovers fanfics to fill the void now.

excellent performance, frustrating third act
Revisado: 10-08-24
I heard Cat Gould first on secrets we keep and thought her performance was inconsistent. that problem is not here. this is Gould at her best with perfect inflections and distinctive voices for each character. I couldn't get enough of her and listened to this book in 1 day. However... the story itself was frustrating. the first two acts were good and sold me on the world and relationships easily, but act 3 dragged. it largely focuses on the main characters' professional pursuits while affirming, separately, that their relationship was doomed every twenty minutes. this situation, seeing the two girls apart from each other, does not end until there's 15 minutes left. I just like more character engagement in a romance and this book felt like it got tired of being a romance halfway through and became a narrative documentary on two fictional lives.

If anyone had told Sadie she'd be homeless and living out of her car at age 25, she'd have laughed in their faces. She'd have laughed even harder if she'd been told her uptight new beauty-parlor boss, Victoria, would steal her heart and stamp all over it. Because Sadie's way smarter than that.

someone remembers Lip Service. I think Cat Gould does a good job with voices, but she frequently reads emotional scenes with a flat voice. the characters aren't, but the narration is. I only took one star from performance because she did a great job a majority of the time.

Thrilling and Sweet
Revisado: 09-21-24
I love lesbian romance with greater dramatic narratives surrounding them. This is definitely that. There's this big fancy murder mystery with lots of satisfying milestone moments, paired with a cute romance between two dorks. The romance is tied to the mystery which makes both progress together. There's also a child character who's treated well and is very cute. The writing is excellent and the performance is perfect. I listened to the whole book in less than a day because I just couldn't bring myself to turn it off. Really a wonderful book and I can't wait to listen to the sequel.

Revisado: 08-12-24
I listened to the whole damn thing in one night. I'm still getting used to Lori Prince's way of speaking, but Ivins' academic adventure was a great setting for Prince's emphatic voices. The ending totally ruled, and the palpable tension keeps you hooked all the way up to it.

Epic fantasy adventure lesbian romance. The narrator is impeccable and combined with the story makes for a very emotional journey of love and discovery. The world building and detail makes this feel like the lesbian version of the Witcher and better in every possible way. I can't wait to see what Noon does next.

Love with Spice
Revisado: 07-31-24
I listened to this after the sequel, so the ending was kinda spoiled for me, but the two are very different stories and stand on their own. While Cover Story is more dramatic and tense, Stars Collide is a fluffy show burn that doesn't really get dramatic until the last few chapters. The narrator kills it again, and was the reason I jumped into this own despite not knowing it was connected to Cover Story. Another 5/5 across the board!

idk if there was anything I disliked. This book was stellar, a welcome surprise since I started it just to have something playing while doing chores. But I couldn't stop listening. The performance was seizing and the story was dramatic, heartwarming, and satisfying. If you like sapphic romance, this needs to be on your list.
