Not a good Georgette Heyer
Revisado: 10-02-24
Oh this is so disappointing! I am a fan of GH and love 90% of her stories but this one did not work for me. The only good thing was Nicky and his dog. If you are choosing between this GH and any other (I have read them all) choose another!
The narrator did not help. Very stilted.

I read these books 30 years ago. Listening to them now with this narrator: fantastic! He can do a distinctive range of voices.. male, female, Scottish, English, French, Spanish, Turkish… a riveting performance.

Sharpe's mission had seemed simple: capture a small unguarded French coastal fort, cripple Napoleon's supply lines, and retreat across the sea. But behind the lines, Sharpe's old enemy, Pierre Ducos, awaits Sharpe's arrival with a battalion of French soldiers and a vicious commanding general who keeps the scalps of his dead enemies as trophies.

Rollicking Good Tale
Revisado: 12-20-22
Warning: Sharpe books are highly addictive. I’m so excited that I have another TWENTY to go! The first two have been terrific. I’m loving meeting the Duke of Wellington early in his career. Sharpe is just wonderful: a rogue but an extraordinary soldier. Courageous and funny and humble and arrogant and it’s nice to see how he learns lessons along the way. The narrator is excellent. I came to these books because I’d enjoyed his reading of The Last Lion so much. Wow. Excellent accents and pacing. Enjoy!

Historia
Winston Churchill is perhaps the most important political figure of the 20th century. His great oratory and leadership during the Second World War were only part of his huge breadth of experience and achievement. Studying his life is a fascinating way to imbibe the history of his era and gain insight into key events that have shaped our time.

In every way, this was an epic read. The narrator was delightful, the writing riveting and the story of Churchill’s trials and tribulations spell binding. It’s a monster of a read… and worth every page.
I am amazed by the scope of Churchill’s life and his energy and endurance. He had an incredibly rich life. He is an inspiration!

Ghastly reading voice
Revisado: 03-16-22
I was really disappointed. The reader’s accent was terrible. People who grow up in Devon do not have cockney accents. People who grow up in Australia do not have cockney accents either. Many words were mis pronounced. I struggled to listen. How to ruin a good story!

Historia
When the dashing Jack Carstares is unfairly accused of cheating at cards, he leaves the country in disgrace. Returning some years later disguised as a highwayman, his reappearance heralds a dramatic chain of events that includes a Duke, a damsel, a duel, and not one, but two kidnappings. Written when she was just 17, The Black Moth was Heyer’s first novel, but it bears many of the hallmarks of her later romances, being vivid, witty, and peppered with historical insight.

Delightful First Story!
Revisado: 03-19-21
I LOVE this book! I am a Heyer addict and yet had not read this, her first, til now. And it is actually wonderful to come to this later. I know TOS almost by heart, so reading TBM and seeing it as the first draft of TOS was fascinating. The reading is a little over dramatic, but non the worse for that. Imagine, at 19, creating this exciting, witty, dramatic story. The kidnapping is quite scary.. and Jenny is almost my favorite four legged character that GH has imagined.
