OK, then...
Revisado: 04-29-22
Karen seems like a warm and kind person. I tried to lay aside the fact that her viewpoints are the opposite of mine and just enjoy the story. I did get bored in a few places. Other parts of the book were gritty and a little uncomfortable. Her descriptions of the activities behind the scenes of Little House were not surprising. I doubt I will want to listen to this book again but it isn't the worst either.

Historia
Based on extensive research and access to Alcott's journals and correspondence, Cheever chronicles all aspects of Alcott's life, beginning with the fateful meeting of her parents to her death, just two days after that of her dynamic and domineering father, Bronson. Cheever examines Alcott's role as a woman, a working writer, and a daughter at a time when Alcott's rejection of marriage in favor of independence - a decision to be no man's "little woman" - was seen as defying conventional wisdom.

Entertaining
Revisado: 01-09-19
While I strongly disagree with the main thesis of this book (which is written through a modern feminist and progressive lens), I found it to be quite entertaining. I am fascinated with 18th- and 19th- century life and was already familiar with Alcott and her work. What I already knew of the Alcotts as a quirky family was expanded in my knowledge. Louisa's story (while I disagree with her philosophically) is one of the most interesting of the famous women of the 19th century. In this book I was transported to another time, place, and way of looking at the world.

Engaging Story
Revisado: 03-09-18
This was a good story but the narrator's fake Southern accent was distracting. The story was quite depressing at times yet I became hooked. This book inspired me to look up more information about the main character and her family.

Historia
Abigail Adams offers a fresh perspective on the famous events of Adams's life, and along the way, Woody Holton, a renowned historian of the American Revolution, takes on numerous myths about the men and women of the founding era. But the book also demonstrates that domestic dramas---from unplanned pregnancies to untimely deaths---could be just as heartbreaking, significant, and inspiring as the actions of statesmen and soldiers.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 02-23-18
I enjoyed hearing the details of the life of Abigail Adams. I have always been fascinated by her and the time period in which she lived. My most significant critique of the book is that it over-emphasizes the theme of the injustice of coverture laws. The author plainly made Abigail's acquisition of personal property in spite of the laws of her time the main theme of the book. However, I found the continuous mention of it to be annoyingly repetitive. Otherwise, I became enthralled by the telling of her life story and in learning new details about her children and other relatives. She truly was a remarkable woman. The narrator was average. I did not enjoy the slight vocal fry in her voice.

Historia
Millions of fans of Little House on the Prairie believe they know Laura Ingalls - the pioneer girl who survived blizzards and near-starvation on the Great Plains, and the woman who wrote the famous autobiographical books. But the true story of her life has never been fully told. Now, drawing on unpublished manuscripts, letters, diaries, and land and financial records, Caroline Fraser masterfully fills in the gaps in Wilder's biography.

Insulting and cynical. A real downer.
Revisado: 02-08-18
The author seems to have an ax to grind against those in America's past and rural Americans in general. Laura's story is painted with overtones of extreme personal opinions regarding agriculture and ecology. This book unnecessarily politicizes nearly every event in Laura's lifetime. I have read many books about her and I understand her life was much grittier than her novels portray. A much better resource is Becoming Laura Ingalls Wilder: The Woman Behind the Legend.
