Historia
On a brisk autumn day in 1686, 18-year-old Nella Oortman arrives in Amsterdam to begin a new life as the wife of illustrious merchant trader Johannes Brandt. But her new home, while splendorous, is not welcoming. Johannes is kind yet distant, always locked in his study or at his warehouse office - leaving Nella alone with his sister, the sharp-tongued and forbidding Marin.

Unique story, well read.
Revisado: 07-22-24
A compelling and somewhat mysterious story that asks many questions. The 4 main characters are well defined and allow their personalities develop; it is essentially about this development within the backdrop of the societal constraints of the time and the happenings of the plot. The mystery surrounding the miniaturist is somewhat unsatisfactorily explained to my mind but altogether a good book.

Historia
When the celebrated critic and cultural historian Alexandra Harris returned to her childhood home of West Sussex, she realised that she barely knew the place at all. As she probed beneath the surface, excavating layers of archival records and everyday objects, bringing a lifetime's reading to bear on the place where she started, hundreds of unexpected stories and hypnotic voices emerged from the area's past. Who has stood here, she asks; what did they see?

The research behind the simple and relaxed retelling of these lives must have been massive ; the editing also a major task leaving each detail of enormous interest.

Just brilliant.

Social history and entwined family relationships between totally believable individuals told through their own understandings of their lives.
A complex book with many characters which would be too confusing if not for the skill of the writer. Beautiful language.

A compassionate story about wholly believable people
Revisado: 10-04-22
This story is somewhat off-putting in the beginning, lengthy passages of foreign languages are off-putting, but I’m so glad I continued, continued to seemingly know many of the characters, how they spoke, felt and thought in the long hours that bound them to each other.

Beautifully read but …..
Revisado: 09-22-22
The plot is good and main characters are well drawn as we have come to expect from this author but the twitter correspondence is almost never ending and contributes to a matrix of clues and false leads that I failed to bother with at times.
I am led to agree that Rowling has a private agenda to teach us ordinary folk how dangerous anonymous private and public groups can be in spreading misinformation and hate and how difficult it can be to extract oneself from them once begun.

Historia
Douglas Petersen may be mild-mannered, but behind his reserve lies a sense of humor that seduces beautiful Connie into a second date...and eventually into marriage. Now, almost three decades later, they live more or less happily in the London suburbs with their moody seventeen year-old son, Albie. Then Connie tells him she thinks she wants a divorce. The timing couldn’t be worse. Connie has planned a month-long tour of European capitals, a chance to experience the world’s greatest works of art as a family, and she can’t bring herself to cancel. And maybe going ahead is for the best anyway? Douglas is privately convinced that this landmark trip will rekindle the romance in the marriage, and might even help him to bond with Albie. Narrated from Douglas’s endearingly honest, slyly witty, and at times achingly optimistic point of view, Us is the story of a man trying to rescue his relationship with the woman he loves, and learning how to get closer to a son who’s always felt like a stranger.

A study of a boring irritating husband.
Revisado: 06-30-22
I found the story engaging but it needed editing. The ‘I’ person was pretty irritating, with little insight, this was his character but none the less having lived with a person with similar characteristics for 60 years I came no nearer to finding it totally charming. I also found fault with the reader who muddled the London with the Australian accents to a disgraceful degree at times.

Historia
Set against the backdrop of an elegant Cornwall mansion before World War II and a vast continent-spanning canvas during the turbulent war years, this captivating story tells of an extraordinary young woman's coming of age, coming to grips with love and sadness, and in every sense of the term, coming home.... In 1935, Judith Dunbar is left behind at a British boarding school when her mother and baby sister go off to join her father in Singapore.

The story comprehensively covers the changes brought about by the war to several levels of society through the varied experiences of two friends and their families. It is a romantic and poetic tale as the girls experience love and loss, joy and beauty of nature found in the Cornish villages and also for one in Sri Lanka.

A great story but spoiled by intrusive sounds.
Revisado: 03-23-20
Sadly it was difficult quite often to establish which of the characters was speaking . Dramatic sounds should have helped to indicate where and where abouts the scene changed but they were often heavy handed and told us little.
