Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

This book is alive. It is noisy and thoughtful and full of rich characters whose antics carry you along. Not a particularly linear work of art, but a living breathing thing.

Historia
Renée Ballard is working the night beat again and returns to Hollywood Station in the early hours only to find a stranger rifling through old file cabinets. The intruder is retired detective Harry Bosch, working a cold case that has gotten under his skin. Ballard kicks him out but then checks into the case herself, and it brings a deep tug of empathy and anger. Bosch is investigating the death of 15-year-old Daisy Clayton, a runaway on the streets of Hollywood who was brutally murdered and her body left in a dumpster like so much trash. Now, Ballard joins forces with Bosch.

Disturbingly shallow
Revisado: 11-24-18
Although Titus Welliver plays a good Bosch on TV, he is a terrible reader.
Everything seems artificial. There is a lack of subtlety in both main characters and... they won't let me use quotation marks...bad guys, that feels more like some invented TV thing and much less like a novel by Connelly. Bosch himself is completely sure of his... instincts.... about the guilt of his bad guys. His actions seem to give real world police carte blanche to act instinctively too. In my opinion, this is just plain dangerous and stupid writing. For instance, Bosch sees on a video feed, that a group of police, at the sound of a colleague yelling...GUN... blast away a suspect and his driver before they have actually seen any gun. A gun which was there, but not even being held properly to shoot with. Without comment or reaction, Bosch quietly closes the computer window.
I'm sorry, but how many young innocent men have been killed this way? It's not entertainment anymore. This book has ended my interest in this series. This cannot be Connelly. We are being manipulated.

Unlike anything else I’ve listened to
Revisado: 11-17-17
This book has depth. An Arizona that is dark and poor and filled with life. Scary life sometimes, but very real. Both because it is written with originality and a great ear for how the characters talk and because the reader is impeccable, a complete world is opened for us, the listener, which I️ suspect few of us have previously visited.

Good story, quite riveting.
Revisado: 09-17-17
Kathryn Croft has written a tight disturbing little book that is fun to listen to. That sounds strange but it's true. There are threads left hanging and the abrupt ending is not as satisfying as one might want, but the book is still interesting to read. As long as you can stand the ending.

When a murder rocks the isolated community of Entry Island, insomniac homicide detective Sime Mackenzie boards a light aircraft at St. Hubert airfield bound for the small, scattered chain of Madeline Islands, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, as part of an eight-officer investigation team from Montréal. Only two kilometers wide and three long, Entry Island is home to a population of just more than 100 inhabitants, the wealthiest of whom has just been discovered murdered in his home.

Real writing
Revisado: 03-29-17
Even as I enjoy so many books in the "mystery" genre, I do eventually crave books that are spectacularly written. Peter May is my current delight. It is partly his love of the bleak landscapes he gives us and his interwoven, interlocking generations, which he so successfully evokes that make his best books ( and this is one) so rich and substantial.
