Historia
In a quiet small town in New Brunswick, old Agatha Treadway makes one last cranky complaint to her niece before dying on her kitchen floor. The cause seems to be a jar of contaminated string beans, which sat on Agatha's basement shelf for years before becoming her final meal. The town doctor calls it a tragic accident - and a warning to all who can their own vegetables - but Agatha's neighbor, the intrepid Janet Wadman, knows better. Agatha was an expert canner, which means the beans must have been placed there by someone else. This was murder.

Very nice job of voicing the different characters.

I enjoyed listening to this book. Characters were well defined and entertaining to listen to. I think it enhanced the story quite a bit.

Disappointing
Revisado: 04-26-25
[Possible spoiler]. From the beginning I suspected this would be like Agatha Christie’s Roger Ackroyd. I didn’t like this technique when she used it. I didn’t like it here either. Too bad.

Wonderful musings on the author’s life, society, and politics (eerily as apt today as when they were written some 20 years ago)!
Revisado: 04-21-25
I really enjoyed the humor and intelligence with which this was written. It was very entertaining and astonishingly dead on with the political observations. Vonnegut is one of a kind as a writer. This helps you understand how he developed into the writer he became, but it is totally enjoyable even if you haven’t read any of his books. I highly recommend it. You can easily listen to it in one session.

Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

The story was exciting, well-plotted,and very interesting, BUT
Revisado: 04-20-25
But it leaves you up in the air with the ending. Now I know it’s a common technique to make you have to read the next book, but this one also left me somewhat confused, which only one other book has ever done before. So
I was rather dissatisfied. I will probably read the next one, but this annoyed me quite a bit. I re-read several chapters to see if I’d missed something, but it didn’t clarify it for me, so I had to take a star awaywhich I hated to do since the rest was so good. I also found the sex to be a bit overly graphic. I guess it titillates the teenyboppers, but I think this was a case where less would have been more.

Undine’s main talent, aside from cultivating disgusting habits, seems to be raising Flavia’s hackles, although in her best moments she shows potential for trespassing, trickery, and other assorted mayhem. When Major Greyleigh, a local recluse and former hangman, is found dead after a breakfast of poisonous mushrooms, suspicion falls on the de Luce family’s longtime cook, Mrs. Mullet.

Flavia de Luce is always a treat, especially as read by Jane Entwistle!
Revisado: 11-03-24
The Flavia de Luce series is a charmingly original take on a detective series. The precocious young heroine’s ability to solve crimes through chemistry, logic, derring do, and imagination cannot help but beguile the reader into enjoying her process immensely. I’ve read and enjoyed all of them. The pause in the series was hard to take, but I’m delighted the author has returned to writing them. I will be waiting to snatch all future offerings. And, I do hope that Jane Entwistle will continue to bring the characters to life. Her narration of the books has been utter delight and, as they say, “pitch perfect”!

Revisado: 06-12-24
I’ve become totally addicted to the Her Royal Spyness series. They are predictably entertaining, filled with interesting new casts of characters and locals, and plots that keep you guessing throughout. It’s nice to have a bright spot in your day that someone else does all the work for you. The Audible versions are especially nice because both the readers they have had for the series (Kathryn Kellgren and Jasmine Blackborrow) are superb readers whose vocal talents enhance the fun tremendously. My hearty thanks to all involved!

I was so excited when Darcy announced out of the blue that we were flying to Kenya for our extended honeymoon. Now that we are here, I suspect he has actually been sent to fulfill another secret mission. I am trying very hard not to pick a fight about it, because after all, we are in paradise! Darcy finally confides that there have been robberies in London and Paris. It seems the thief was a member of the aristocracy and may have fled to Kenya. Since we are staying in the Happy Valley, we are well positioned to hunt for clues and ferret out possible suspects.

Revisado: 06-04-24
An entertaining installment in the series that finally brings Georgiana and Darcy to their honeymoon. And what a honeymoon it is, rife with exotic locations, wild animals, and some pretty wild humans as well. Fun, though not my favorite in the series; it’s still well worth the read if you are as addicted to this series as I am!

Just as she despairs of ever finding a home, her godfather offers his fully staffed country estate. But something sinister is afoot....

Maybe my favorite so far! Great plot, lots of surprises, and a wonderful new narrator.
Revisado: 05-24-24
I admit I was was worried when I saw there was a new narrator for this Royal Spyness volume, because Katherine Kellgren did such a fabulous job on the books in the series before this one. She was so entertaining. She created great characters and read with such enthusiasm. I was afraid I’d be so disappointed that I’d have to abandon listening to this the series because it would just feel wrong. But, what a wonderful surprise! They found someone who did an equally delightful job. Kudos to whomever found Jasmine Blackborow, she did a terrific job narrating this story. Now I can happily listen to all the rest of the series. I am relieved and delighted. I know we will all miss Ms. Kellgren, but it is great to know that they searched for someone who would carry on her legacy so adeptly.
